The primary purpose of this position is to lead three or more workers to carry out heavy and automotive mechanic work on a substantially full time and continuing basis. The leader is responsible to both perform the work assigned by a supervisor and ensure that subordinates completed assigned work is consistent with trades and labor standards.
Duties
- Leads a team of trades and/or labor workers
- Performs work. Performs nonsupervisory trades and/or labor work that is usually of the same kind and level as occupations and grade of the team for which they are assigned working leader.
- Uses diagnostic tools, orders parts, completes documentation, and provides training and assistance to others.
- Shop environmental coordinator and shop safety representative.

- The work requires the employee to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate, valid driver’s license is required for the position
- This position has been designated by the Air Force as a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Air Force Civilian Drug Demand Reduction Program. Employee must pass initial and periodic short notice drug testing.
- Illegal drug use by employees in sensitive positions presents a clear threat to the mission of the Air Force, national security, and public safety.
- Incumbent must possess or have the capability to acquire an appropriate Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and any required endorsements within 12 months of assignment. This requirement is a condition of employment.
- Employee is required to utilize security and safety practices and procedures at all times. Must wear protective safety equipment and clothing when appropriate

- This position requires a physical/medical examination. The physical requirements of this position as determined by the manager are: The employee works in tiring, awkward, or uncomfortable positions for long periods of time.
- Work is performed on top of, under, and in tight compartments of vehicles. Frequent standing, bending, reaching, stretching, and crouching is required.
- Frequent lifting, handling, and carrying of parts and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds is required. Similar effort is exerted in pushing, pulling, and positioning heavy parts, assemblies, and equipment.
- This is a Mission-Essential position performing a Mission-Critical-Function which must continue uninterrupted after the occurrence of an emergency and continued through full resumption of all functions.
- The duties of this position meets all requirements as a cat4 designation, and shall not be vacated during a national emergency or mobilization without seriously impairing the capability of the parent Federal Agency or office to function effectively.
- This position must be removed from the Ready Reserve and CAN NOT become a member of the Ready Reserve. (IAW: DoDD 1200.7, "Screening the Ready Reserve,").
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance
Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-5800-Transportation/Mobile Equipment Maintenance Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.
The screen out element for this position is the ability to lead.
JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1. Knowledge of a variety of types of heavy mobile equipment and automotive vehicles sufficient to troubleshoot, repair overhaul, modify, tear down/rebuild, and maintain systems and components.
2. Skill in troubleshooting and repairing malfunctions in a variety of types of heavy and light vehicles and vehicular equipment.
3. Knowledge of safety regulations, practices, procedures and environmental directives pertaining to overseeing and handling hazardous materials. Knowledge of using a variety of hand and power tools, maintenance of tools, measuring instruments, diagnostic test equipment, and equipment common to trades and labor work performed by the group being led.
4. Ability to interpret and apply manufacturers' repair manuals, technical specifications, schematics, safety manuals, and similar guides sufficient to effectively maintain, repair, overhaul, and tear down/rebuild equipment components and systems. Ability to communicate effectively, provide training to others, and maintain records.
5. Ability to lead a team of three or more labor or trade employees.
6. Ability to plan and organize work assignments to include determining resources required to accomplish mission.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
PHYSICAL EFFORT: The employee works in tiring, awkward, or uncomfortable positions for long periods of time. Work is performed on top of, under, and in tight compartments of vehicles. Frequent standing, bending, reaching, stretching, and crouching is required. Frequent lifting, handling, and carrying of parts and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds is required. WORKING CONDITIONS: Usually works indoors on concrete surfaces and is exposed to drafts, changing temperatures, and loud noise. When working outside, the employee is exposed to inclement weather conditions. The worker is constantly exposed to irritations and discomfort from dirt, dust, and fumes. Worker is subject to cuts, burns, chemical irritations, bruises, electrical shock, and injuries from falls. Follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as protective ear devices, hard hats, hard-toe shoes, gloves, respirators, and protective clothing. Some of these safety items may be uncomfortable to wear or use.
