The employee performs ongoing patient care duties in the Emergency Department. Duties include providing assessment and management of ambulatory patients seen in the Emergency Department. The incumbent will evaluate patients for emergency medical conditions, order appropriate diagnostic studies and perform a wide range of treatment procedures under the direction of the supervising physician.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: The incumbent assists in behavioral/psychiatric situations to include crisis intervention, management of aggressive or suicidal psychiatric patients, and one-to-one observations. The incumbent assists Emergency Department Physicians with complex, specialized, and potentially life threatening procedures such as defibrillation, cardioversions, insertion of chest drainage tubes, or initiation of mechanical ventilation to restore normal physiological function or prevent deterioration of patient's condition. The incumbent must independently recognize life threatening situations and act to correct these according to established national or facility protocols. Performs airway management using BIPAP and advanced airway techniques including the use of LMA and oral intubations using laryngoscope if properly trained, credentialed and privileged may be included as responsibilities. This requires understanding in the use of pulse oximetry, capnometry, capnography, or other secondary confirmation methods to ensure correct placement of emergency advanced airway devices. Operates specialized medical equipment such as defibrillators, electrocardiographs, and oxygen apparatus. Assesses patient status and keeps physician informed of any change or need for additional treatment. Dressing changes, wound management, suture removal, repair of simple lacerations, Foley catheters insertion, splint, binder and bandage applications, and performance of tracheotomy care. Specimen collection, preparation and transfer to the lab for processing of blood, tissue, urine, stool and sputum is expected to be a routine part of his/her practice. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 01/25/2024. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-07 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade.
