The Restorative Nursing Assistant will be responsible for providing safe, effective care to patients/residents. Activities will include bathing, personal hygiene, assisting with feeding, taking-recording-reporting vital signs accurately, assisting ambulation and other duties assigned.

Duties

The Restorative Nursing Assistant will be responsible for providing safe, effective care to patients/residents. The Restorative Nursing Assistant is responsible for assisting in and teaching restorative nursing care functions with the purpose of facilitating optimal functional independence of residents within the CLC. This includes observing, reporting and documenting pertinent information in the clinical record. The Restorative Nursing Assistant works with maximum initiative and minimal supervision, demonstrates leadership to the nursing staff in restorative care principles, and teaches proper technique and procedure by example. He/she promotes maximum resident motivation and independence and provides residents with a sense of self-worth and dignity by fostering self-reliance. a. Ability to assist in the full range of nursing care to patients/residents with physical and/or behavioral problems in an inpatient/outpatient setting under the direction of the Registered Nurse and/or Licensed Vocational Nurse/Licensed Practical Nurse. Ability to properly use equipment, materials and supplies in simple diagnostic and treatment procedures such as bladder scan, continuous passive motion device, specimen collection, etc. This includes safety & 1:1 watch observations following PMDB competency b. Ability to communicate orally with patients/residents, families, interdisciplinary team and other personnel. This includes serving as a preceptor to new CNAs by assisting with the coordination of their orientation and overseeing/assessing their practical experience while in a clinical setting. c. Ability to recognize and react to emergent patient care situations and intervene while waiting for assistance. For example, recognizing need for basic life support, controlling bleeding and assisting with behavior crisis etc. Restorative Care Functions and Duties: 1) Demonstrate knowledge of geriatric care to participate in a restorative plan of can. 2) Perform restorative care according to the plan of care for the resident using a safe manner. 3) Recommends modifications and changes in the resident's restorative care plan as indicated. 4) Performs supportive instruction, cueing, assistance and/or supervision inactive or active assisted range of motion exercises. 5) Performs passive range of motion exercises. 6) Provides assistance with splint/brace application and removal with verbal and physical guidance and monitoring of skin integrity. 7) Performs supportive instruction for transfer procedures using appropriate techniques, body mechanics and equipment. 8) Performs supportive instruction, cueing assistance and/or supervision in bed mobility procedures including positioning, moving to either side, turning, moving to head and foot of bed, and moving from supine to sitting position.\ 9) Performs supportive instruction, cueing, assistance and/or supervision in transfer procedures with or without assistive devices. 10) Performs supportive instruction, cueing, assistance and/or supervision in ambulation with or without assistive devices. 11)Assists and/or supervises the resident with personal hygiene, dressing and/or grooming. 12) Assists and/or supervises the resident with eating or swallowing of foods and fluids. 13)Performs supportive instruction, cueing, assistance and/or supervision in amputation and prosthesis care including application/removal of the prosthesis, caring for the prosthesis, noting the amputation skin integrity, and providing appropriate hygiene at the site where the prosthesis attaches to the body. 14)Assists the resident in using newly acquired functional communication skills or assisting the resident in using residual communication and adaptive devices. 15)Performs supportive instruction, cueing, assistance and/or supervision in bowel and bladder continence per Bowel and Bladder Toileting Program. 16)Record accurate data related to restorative care activities. 17)Maintain positive and supportive relationships with residents. 18)Participate in team conferences and care plan meetings, contribute to care plan meetings. 19) Makes visual observations of changes in resident's physical or emotional condition and keep care team informed. Basic Requirements: a. Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, this part.) b. Education or Training. One year above high school with courses related to the NA occupation. Completion of an intensive, specialized, occupation-related course of study of less than one year as a nursing assistant may also meet in full the experience requirements for GS-3. c. Physical Requirements. See VA Directive and Handbook 5019. d. English Language Proficiency. NA 's must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, part II, chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j Grade Determinations: GS-3 NA (Entry Level)(a) Experience [and] Education. None beyond the basic requirements.(b) Assignments. Individuals assigned as GS-3 NA's are considered to be at the entry level and are closely supervised. GS-4 NA (a)Experience. One year of specialized experience as a [NA] or experience in another medical field (licensed practical nurse, health technician, hospital corpsman, etc.), performing technical and nursing skills requiring knowledge of the human physical and emotional states, therapeutic communication, and technical skills required for basic and intermediate treatments; OR, (b) Education. Successful completion of 2 years above high school in an accredited institution with courses related to nursing care, health care or in a field of study appropriate to the specialization of the position, such as education in a program for psychology, psychiatric, or operating room technicians; AND (c) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs). In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: 1. Ability to provide a range of patient/resident care and contribute to the completion of the nurse care plan and recovery of patients/residents. 2. Ability to observe patients/residents' or resident's physical or emotional status and refer deviations and/or problems to supervisor in a timely manner. 3. Ability to properly use equipment, materials and supplies in simple diagnostic and treatment procedures such as bladder scan, continuous passive motion device, blood glucose monitoring machine, specimen collection, etc. 4. Ability to communicate effectively with patients/residents, their families and other health professionals. GS-5 NA (Full Performance Level)(a) Experience. (a)One year of progressively responsible assignments and experience equivalent to the GS-4 level which demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities that are directly related to the specific assignment. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the professional KSAs in subparagraph (c) below; OR, (b) Education. Successful completion of a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree that included 24 semester hours of courses related to health care or possession of a bachelor's degree; AND (c) Demonstrated KSAs 1. Ability to assist in the full range of nursing care to patients/residents with physical and/or behavioral problems in a hospital, long term care or outpatient setting under the direction of a Registered Nurse and/or Licensed Vocational Nurse/Licensed Practical Nurse. 2.
