The purpose of this position is to maintain, operate, and repair major equipment/utility systems including two hot water generators, two low pressure hot water boilers, and water treatment; four 750 kilowatt emergency electrical generator; and air compressors, vacuum pumps, and related equipment. Position is located at Shiprock Service Unit, Four Corners Regional Health Center (FCRHC), Facilities Management Branch, in Red Mesa, AZ.

Duties

Maintains, operates, and repair two hot water generators, two gas/oil fired low pressure boilers. Performs major repairs on equipment such as installing, connecting, and adjusting components including electrical transformers, rotors, electrodes, solenoids, switches, pressuretrols, thermostats, and rheostats. Repairs and replaces water regulators, oil, gas, and air feeders, and controls, alarms, safety devices, and blower motors. Dismantles, cleans and inspects boilers, and performs other repairs to maintain boilers in safe operation conditions. Tests boilers water for proper amount of phosphates, caustic, tannins, and other treatment chemicals to maintain a clean, corrosion free system. Maintains, operates, and performs minor repairs for 750 kilowatt emergency electrical generator. Performs and records all required preventative maintenance on generator system. Maintains, operates, and repairs hospital air compressor systems including two medical compressors and pneumatic compressor.

Independently determining the nature of troubles in mechanical systems and the extent of required repairs, testing, adjusting and aligning to insure the repaired equipment and related integral devices are aligned and functioning properly and safely. Performs preventive maintenance on all equipment and test all equipment for effective/efficient use. PHYSICAL EFFORTS: Exerts physical effort in stretching such as turning valves, climbing, and working at heights on ladders and catwalks, and working in prone and stooped positions. Works in cramped and confined areas such as interior of boilers and around mechanical equipment located in crawl spaces. WORKING CONDITIONS: The incumbent will work in confined spaces where dust and ashes are present, and will be subject to the heat hazards of boiler bursts, scalding water, and steam and flare back of combustion flames. Works in areas where there is danger of electrical shock and where there may be toxic amounts of gases and caustic or other chemical burns. Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
