This position is assigned to the Health Administration Service at the Northern Arizona VA Health Care System (located in Prescott, Arizona). The primary purpose of this position is to provide the services and perform the duties inherent in switchboard operations of the medical facility. The work involves routing the calls to their proper destinations and providing telephone and organizational information to callers. The switchboard operates 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.
Duties
Duties may include, but are not limited to:
Placing and receiving local calls.
Providing directory assistance to callers by retrieving organizational information from computerized directory databases.
Placing personal calls for senior employees, physicians, bed-restricted patients, and visiting dignitaries and other personnel at the facility.
Preparing and recording long distance and local information regarding the facility's communications management system and other special telephone studies utilizing toll tickets and summary sheets, as required.
Monitoring vital circuits and incoming emergency type calls such as those to security, the police, the fire department, etc., to assure call completion and proper disposition.
Retrieving and/or updating relevant information in computerized databases using detailed procedural instructions and established guidelines pertaining to customers assistance, record keeping, and call receiving, placing, and monitoring.
Performing other duties, as assigned by the Service Chief.
Work Schedule: Monday- Friday, 08:00 A.M. to 04:30 P.M.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 01/20/2024.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-04 position, you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-03. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade.
Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.
You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-03 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: clerical, office, or other work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled. OR,
Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have two (2) years of education above the high school level. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university. One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED - must have conferred date of degree for full credit). OR,
Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education beyond the high school level to meet the total experience requirement.

Physical Requirements: The work is usually sedentary, but may involve some standing and walking to consult directories and manuals.
