This Pipefitter position is within the Facilities Management Services at the Bedford VA Healthcare System, located in Bedford, MA. It is full-time at 40 hours per week.

Duties

The incumbent performs pipefitting duties on patient wards, tunnels, and administrative areas. These tasks include seasonal heating maintenance and repairs of thermostats, heating elements, traps, and associated valves and piping. Duties include, but are not limited to: Performs pipefitting duties on patient wards, tunnels, and administrative areas to include seasonal heating maintenance and repairs to thermostats, heating elements, traps and associated valves and piping; Conducts work using Local and National safety codes, and possesses knowledge regarding all State and National Codes; Understands and carries out oral instructions and statements of equipment requirements and specifications; Possesses basic knowledge of other construction and building trades, and is familiar with all of the tools, equipment and materials attributed to the position; Selects materials, parts, and supplies needed for making repairs to properly maintain plumbing systems with minimum interruption of service; Familiarizes self with how their activities impact the organization's goal to implement sound stewardship practices that are protective of air, water, land, and other cultural resources; Performs a variety of tasks on an as-needed basis involving the installation, modification and repairs to new and existing systems; and Other duties as assigned. Qualifications

Physical Efforts: The incumbent may be required to bend, reach and hold awkward positions for prolonged periods. Frequently works from ladders, platforms, high places and cramped spaces. Considerable climbing, walking and stooping is also required for this position. Frequently lifts and moves objects up to 50 pounds and occasionally lifts and carries objects over 50 pounds, either alone or with others. Working Conditions: The incumbent works indoors and outdoors, in all weather conditions, and is exposed to the usual occupational hazards. Must work in steam manholes, unexcavated cellars, attics, pipe spaces, around boilers and high pressure steam lines. Incumbent is subject to possible burns and other construction hazards, above normal temperatures and exposure to toxic and explosive vapors. Required to work in noisy, dusty, dirty, and damp places. Occasionaly required to work outdoors in bad weather.
