The health technician performs both clinical and administrative duties in support of the mission for the Department of Veteran Affairs, North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Health System, Diagnostic Imaging Service. The Diagnostic Imaging at NF/SGVHS includes the Radiology and Nuclear Medicine departments at the Malcom Randall VA Medical Center and the Lake City VA Medical Center, Jacksonville, Tallahassee and the Villages Outpatient clinics.

Duties

Assists with coordination of work assignments to ensure a smooth workflow. Checks equipment to ensure it is in working order. Performs daily testing, documentation, replacement and maintenance of the Crash Cart equipment. Assists technologists and staff with the use and operation of ancillary equipment. Provides quality customer service, explains all studies to patient in a clear, professional manner and provides information and resources to patient and family. Communicates effectively with patients, their families and all care providers. Interacts with staff and co-workers in manner that promotes positive working relationships. Arranges in-house transportation for inpatients, ER and outpatients and ensures transportation of patients is completed in a timely manner. Receives and directs patients to the appropriate procedure room based on type of procedure that will be performed. Checks the order for complete information, protocol and appropriateness criteria for specific modality. Adheres to established section and organizational policy and procedures, QA guidelines and regulatory requirement. Checks the patient's electronic chart for potential interactions, abnormal lab results or patient conditions that could make it unsafe for the patient to have the requested procedure. Prepares any documentation or results needed by Radiologist for exam/procedure. Assists AMSA and independently schedules patients for exams and/or procedures. Operates office equipment such as computers, fax machines, photocopiers, voicemail messaging systems and computer scanning equipment. Coordinates preventative maintenance and/or repair to ensure operability of the equipment. Transport of patients. Position Description Title/PD#: Health Technician (Radiology)/PD05904F Physical Requirements: Physical demands are usually moderate: Lifting objects up to 40 pounds, moving specialized equipment and assisting patients from a gurney to a procedure or scan table. Occasionally, the technician assists with the moving of heavy equipment or large patients but this is done with the assistance of others to minimize the danger to the individual. Since many of the imaging procedures are performed using x-ray, the incumbent frequently works in and around x-ray producing equipment, requiring the use of a lead apron and other protective equipment. During a procedure, standing for extended periods while wearing a lead apron, is necessary. The incumbent must also work at a computer desk at times. Work Environment: The position usually works in a clinic setting with exposure to a variety of patient illnesses, transferable diseases, medical gases, surgical type equipment, and x-ray producing devices. The majority of time is spent in direct contact with patients. Work is performed in a setting involving the potential for exposure to infectious and contagious diseases, odors and other risks associated with x-ray exposure, that require special health and safety precautions such as wearing personal protective wear ( x-ray film badge, lead apron, goggles, glove, mask, gown, etc). Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. Individual Occupational Requirement (IOR):Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above): Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. Do you possess the required experience as described? GS-06-grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: Experience with safety practices and emergency lifesaving techniques. Experience with equipment and imaging procedures performed in each section of the department including General Radiology, Angiography/Interventional, CT, MRI, Ultrasound, Mammography and Nuclear Medicine. Experience taking and reporting vitals, blood draw and intravenous lines (IVs). Knowledge of radiation exposure precautions and safety procedures. There is no educational substitution for the GS-06 level. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service.
