This position is located on a Forest Service unit to perform a variety of duties involved in the upkeep of buildings, grounds, and related structures, fixtures, and utilities. Assignments include general carpentry, painting, plumbing, roofing, operation of tools and equipment, and other general laborer tasks.

Duties

Conducts visual examinations and operational tests to determine the need for, and the performance of, repair work on a level of difficulty and responsibility of trades such as carpentry, painting, plumbing, roofing, etc. Performs plumbing duties including responding to water system outages and diagnoses water loss problems, repairs leaks, pumps, pipes, and fixtures or related issues, and restores system functionality. Performs general carpentry work such as measuring, cutting, constructing, installing, repairing and modifying wood, composite, and wood substitute items where specific fit and accuracy are within allowable limits to produce a serviceable product.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Skill and Knowledge: Basic knowledge of carpentry sufficient to select and use common tools to measure, cut, join, and square structures of parts of structures. Skill in using common tools such as hammers, saws, screwdrivers, and power tools such as portable circular saws, nailing machines, drill presses, and table and radial arm saws. Uses knowledge of basic assembly and fastening procedures to measure, cut, nail, staple, band, screw, bolt, and join wood framing boards, panes, sheets, and parts. Basic knowledge of painting to perform simple tasks such as painting with brushes and rollers on interior and exterior surfaces where fine finish is not a requirement. Uses standard methods and procedures for removing grease, grime, old paint, dirt, rust and scale from surfaces and smoothing surfaces with sandpaper, wire brushes, and mechanical sanding tools. Applies a basic knowledge of the use of primers, preservatives, stains, enamels, epoxy paints, and various other coatings. Knowledge of a variety of hand and power tools such as jackhammers, chain saws, large power mowers, snow blowers, power tillers, heavy cleaning tools, axes, picks, tampers, hand trucks, dollies, flatbed trucks, floor and carpet maintenance equipment. Knowledge of a variety of cleaning tools and solutions to clean and sanitize a wide variety of surfaces. Responsibility: Performs duties independently in accordance with standard trade techniques and special instructions. The supervisor provides specific guides or instructions by which the incumbent determines the methods, techniques materials, and tools best suited to the particular job. Receives detailed instructions with each new assignment. Work is reviewed while in progress and when finished. Incumbent is expected to recognize those instances requiring supervisory assistance. Identifies and reports to supervisor problems that are beyond the scope of preventive maintenance work. Completed work is reviewed for compliance with instructions and timeliness.
