This position will serve as a Supervisory Police Officer - Captain at the Maryland VA Medical Center, ensuring a safe and secure environment across all VA Administrations with various settings, including a variety of jurisdictional environments. In this capacity, you will direct, coordinate and perform supervisory and non-supervisory policing law enforcement assignments and projects.

Duties

Duties include, but may not be limited to the following: Protects the civil rights of all individuals on VA controlled property; Performs various law enforcement and administrative functions throughout the department; Manages, supervises and coordinates the Police Service law enforcement activities for a designated assigned area; Serves as a watch commander or administrative lieutenant at the geographic area level; Inspects personnel, facilities, and tactics for safety and/or training needs; Establishes priorities to coordinate, plan, organize and complete work; Oversees human resource activities such as recruitment of vacancies; preparing, conducting and reviewing performance evaluations; takes disciplinary action; identifies and conducts specific training; approves and monitors leave requests; Responds to highly dangerous and active crimes in progress Makes independent decisions to take, direct and coordinate immediate steps to preserve life and property; Conducts and/or coordinates long- and short-term investigations; Performs other related duties as assigned. Designated Drug-Testing Position: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received. Work Schedule: Compressed/Flexible Schedule. Candidates must be willing to work weekends, irregular work hours and extended hours if determined by the needs of the service. Furthermore, candidates must be willing to be placed, detailed, or temporarily assigned to other related services and/or locations, if necessary. Virtual: This is not a virtual position.   • Officers must achieve and maintain qualification with agency approved firearms as condition of gaining and continuing employment as a Police Officer.
  • Officers must also successfully complete physical and psychological examinations prior to entering on duty and annually thereafter as a condition of employment.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. GS-10 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-10 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-XX. For example, an applicant who has 9 semester hours of graduate level education (i.e. 50% of graduate education required) and 6 months of creditable specialized experience (i.e. 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience for the position A transcript must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
