This position will serve as a Supervisory Police Officer - Captain at the Maryland VA Medical Center, ensuring a safe and secure environment across all VA Administrations with various settings, including a variety of jurisdictional environments. In this capacity, you will direct, coordinate and perform supervisory and non-supervisory policing law enforcement assignments and projects.

Duties

Duties include, but may not be limited to the following: Protects the civil rights of all individuals on VA controlled property; Performs various law enforcement and administrative functions throughout the department; Manages, supervises and coordinates the Police Service law enforcement activities for a designated assigned area; Serves as a watch commander or administrative lieutenant at the geographic area level; Inspects personnel, facilities, and tactics for safety and/or training needs; Establishes priorities to coordinate, plan, organize and complete work; Oversees human resource activities such as recruitment of vacancies; preparing, conducting and reviewing performance evaluations; takes disciplinary action; identifies and conducts specific training; approves and monitors leave requests; Responds to highly dangerous and active crimes in progress Makes independent decisions to take, direct and coordinate immediate steps to preserve life and property; Conducts and/or coordinates long- and short-term investigations; Performs other related duties as assigned. Designated Drug-Testing Position: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. GS-10 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-10 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-XX.
