About the Position: Serves as a Lead Medical Supply Technician in the Sterile Processing Department at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. This position is 1st shift and provides sterilized surgical instruments for a Medical Treatment Facility (MTF) with 20 Operating Rooms and 45 Clinical spaces.
Management preferred, but not required: Certified Registered Central Service Technician

Duties
Perform daily quality assurance testing on all equipment used in the cleaning and sterilization of surgical instruments. Assembly of surgical instrument sets and medical devices.
Conduct inventory, expiration dates on sterile supply items and trays, to include emergency procedural carts, removes all outdated items, and rotates the stock.
Monitor and track surgical instruments through the use of automated tracking log/system, perform record keeping, tracking operations, maintains and monitors inventory records, and generate purchase orders etc., using a variety of software packages.
Provide technical and administrative oversight of employees performing GS-07 base level work.
Distribute and balance the workload among employees in accordance with established workflow or job specialization, assure timely accomplishment of the assigned workload.
Monitor the status and progress of work, and make day-to-day adjustments in accordance with established priorities, obtaining assistance from the supervisor on problems that may arise.
Maintain records of work accomplishments and time expended and prepare production reports as requested.
Provide on-the-job training to new employees in accordance with established procedures and practices.
Serve as a liaison between the surgeons, operating room personnel and Central Materiel staff to increase communication and identify surgical equipment and supply issues.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 3 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
- This position requires the completion of pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- This position requires incumbent to routinely lift materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
- This position has mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation or exemption must be provided upon hire).
- This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.
- This position may require the incumbent to work on any day or shift, including PMs, nights, weekends, holidays, or on an "on call" basis, necessary to meet mission requirements.
- This position has been designated “Mission Essential”. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations, the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
- This position has been designated Weather Essential. In the event of inclement weather conditions, the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
- This position requires that you obtain and maintain a Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes experience in processing, assembling, troubleshooting, preparing, sterilizing, storing, and issuing sterile and unsterile medical supplies and equipment; preparing production reports as requested; and working independently while making sound decisions. The applicant must possess knowledge of the technical names, general uses, physical characteristics, and operating conditions of medical supply items; extensive knowledge of decontamination, cleaning, preparation, sterilization, and storage procedures; knowledge of aseptic techniques; and skill in operating a washer-sterilizer, ultrasonic instrument cleaners, and gas and steam sterilizers. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).
