This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
About the Position: This position is located at Fort Cavazos, Texas.
Duties
Provide assistance with personal hygiene and other activities of daily living, to include, but not limited to, changing bed linens, collecting and bagging soiled linens, distributing food trays, filling water pitchers and collecting trash.
Assist with ambulation, and movement from bed to chair, bed to bathroom, and bed to gurney.
Perform a variety of diagnostic support duties which include assisting the physician in bedside examinations and procedures.
Change dressings, insert and irrigate catheters, irrigate colostomies, perform oral suctioning, set-up and connect various drainage and suction tubes and assure equipment is functioning properly.
Transport patients off the unit to appointments or procedures.
Take and chart vital signs and record in nursing notes patient's progress, reaction to treatment or procedure, and any change in condition.
Assist with admissions to include obtaining and recording height, weight, and other pertinent information.
Requirements
- You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship.
- Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.
- One year trial/probationary period may be required.
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- A Personnel Security Investigation is required
- This position has specific initial background investigation and periodic re-verification requirements since its duties require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age on a recurring basis.
- This position is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations. Applicants tentatively selected for this position will be required to sign a statement consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
- Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
- A pre-placement medical examination is required.
- This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Red Cross. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS.
- May include shift work (evenings, weekends, holidays).
- May require rotating shifts (i.e. work schedule that requires employees to continuously rotate from one shift to another at predetermined intervals).
- Position may be designated as Inclement Weather Essential. The incumbent must make every attempt to report for work on time and/or remain on duty during severe weather conditions.
- Moderate to heavy lifting up to 50 pounds is required.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Basic Requirement for GS-05 Nursing Assistant:
Experience required: To qualify based on your experience, your resume must describe at least one year of specialized experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as: Assisting care providers during examinations, procedures, or treatments (i.e. throat/wound cultures, dressing changes, blood pressure screenings, ear irrigations, suture removal, bandaging, splinting, etc.); maintaining patient medical records/charts; and obtaining vital signs. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify for this job, you may qualify if your education meets the definitions below:
Education Substitution for Specialized Experience for GS-05: Completion of at least a four-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree in Nursing or related field of study. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
OR
Combination of Experience and Education Substitution for Specialized Experience for GS-05: If you have some, but not all, of the experience or education described above, you may still qualify by combining the amount of creditable experience and education that you possess. To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of undergraduate education in excess of 60 hours (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages. The total must equal at least 100% to qualify. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
