Duties

You will analyze pressure and temperature readings to determine calibration on control readings. You will disassemble and repair compressors and related components of air conditioning systems. You will calculate airflow and pressure-temperature characteristics for the different systems to locate and repair faulty equipment. You will analyze static pressure and velocity meter readings to troubleshoot air flow problems.

Qualifications

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the job elements and screen out listed below. This position has a selective placement factor that will be used to screen out ineligible candidates. The selective placement factor is: Must possess a "Universal Certification" received from an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved certifying program. (Note: A copy of the Universal Certification must be included in your application package to be considered for this position.) This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability to do the work of an Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic without more than normal supervision performing the following duties: 1) Installs refrigeration and air conditioning systems by positioning chillers up to 350 tons, compressors, motors, condensers, humidifiers, dehumidifiers, evaporators, heaters, refrigeration units, and other components in accordance with design specifications. 2) Performs installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of commercial and industrial air conditioning and refrigeration systems, up to 350 tons, that provide a variety of functions such as heating, cooling, humidifying, dehumidifying, freezers and refrigerator units, circulating and filtering. 3) Must have the skill and knowledge to install, maintain, and repair a variety of domestic, industrial, and commercial refrigeration, heating, and air conditioning units up to and including 350 ton, and systems such as walk-in and reach-in coolers; refrigerators and freezers; window, fan-coil and package units; and other such equipment of similar complexity. 4) Must have knowledge of the principles and theories of air conditioning and refrigeration as they relate to the refrigeration cycle, heat transfer laws and the use of refrigerant tables. 5) Responsible for selecting the proper materials, tools and techniques to complete the work in a safe and efficient manner and in accordance with applicable standards. 6) Must have the ability to read and interpret blueprints, specifications and technical instructions. 7) Must have the skill and knowledge to evaluate system operation, detect deficiencies, troubleshoot cause and make necessary adjustments and repairs. 8) Must have the skill and ability to troubleshoot, disassemble, repair and reassemble units such as pumps, compressors, chillers up to 350 tons, evaporators, fan coil units, vav boxes, condenser and motors. 9) Must be skilled in the use of a variety of tools, test equipment, and close tolerance measuring devices such voltmeters, ammeters, multimeters, vacuum and acid pumps, pressure gauges, serviceman's thermometer, humidity recorders, micrometers, calipers and soldering equipment. 10) Must have Universal Certification received from an EPA approved certifying program. Certification card must be carried on person while in a duty status.
