This supervisory SLP is responsible for the supervision, administrative management, and direction of both inpatient and outpatient Audiology and SLP programs under the Specialty Care dept at AVAHCS. Moreover, this position has clinical and patient care duties aligned to the Polytrauma.

Duties

Major duties for the position include (but are not limited to): Responsible for the development and implementation of policies and procedures to address focused clinical needs and overall services delivered and provided within the section. Demonstrate autonomy in performing supervisory responsibilities that includes assigning work to employees, monitoring workload and clinical volume, reviewing work of employees to assure accuracy and validity of submissions, assuring adequate clinical staffing, imposing disciplinary measures, and monitoring clinical privileges. Independently interprets clinical consults and referrals and utilizes appropriate screening and evaluation techniques required to fittingly provide direct clinical services to patients with a wide variety of diagnoses. Demonstrates knowledge and awareness of clinical signs and symptoms to make appropriate referrals for further medical attention/assessment as indicated. Serves as a member of the Rehab interdisciplinary care team and/or other patient care teams as indicated to provide quality, effective, and efficient patient centered care. Communicates effectively, both orally and in writing, with patients, families, caregivers, healthcare professionals to facilitate the interdisciplinary treatment process. Demonstrates sensitivity to the special needs of all patients in respect to age, developmental requirements, and culturally related factors. Demonstrates knowledge and skill in monitoring and evaluating performance of self and subordinates in relation to both effectiveness and efficiency of services provided. Manages time to allow for unforeseen incidents or interruptions in planned program. Is flexible in treatment program; easily adapts to share in over-all section treatment program, as needed. Assists in coverage for absent staff members, to insure continuity of quality patient care. Develops appropriate home program for patient, as needed, prior to discharge. As indicated, instructs family or care provider in ways to assist patient to carry out the program. Recognizes adverse reaction to treatment, significantly altered physical or mental status of patients, and reports to appropriate medical authority. Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship. Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education and Experience. A master's degree, or its equivalent, in speech-language pathology, communication disorders or a directly related field from an accredited college or university AND one year of creditable experience. OR A doctoral degree in speech-language pathology, communication disorders and sciences or a related field, from an accredited college or university. Licensure. Individuals must hold a full, current and unrestricted license in a U.S. state, territory, commonwealth or the District of Columbia. Loss of Credential. An employee in this occupation who fails to obtain licensure/certification/ registration within the required time frame, or who fails to maintain the required licensure/certification/ registration must be removed from the occupation, which may also result in termination of employment. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grandfathering Provision. All persons employed in VHA in this occupational series or in another occupational series that are also performing the duties as described in the qualification standard on the effective date of this qualification standard are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the grade held, including positive education and licensure. Grade Determinations. Experience. In addition to the basic requirements at the GS-12 level, completion of one year of professional experience comparable to the next lower level. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs). In addition to the experience requirements, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs: Skill to translate contemporary and evidence-based speech pathology practice knowledge into clinical procedures. Skill in effective conflict resolution. Ability to analyze organizational and operational problems to develop and implement solutions. Ability to provide clinical and administrative oversight and ensure that section activities are aligned with management goals and objectives. Preferred Experience: Leadership/Management experience preferred. 5 years Speech Path experience preferred. References: VA HANDBOOK 5005/153 Part II, Appendix G30 The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-13. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is GS-13. Physical Requirements: May require standing, lifting, carrying, sitting, stooping, bending, pulling, and pushing.
