The Electronics Mechanic is assigned to the Engineering Service and reports directly to the Chief of Engineering Service. The primary purpose of this position is to ensure the safe and effective systems lifecycle management (procure, install, operate, maintain, repair, replace/dispose) of electronic and specialty equipment and their related information technology (IT) interfaces for the West Texas VA Health Care System.

This position serves as a senior level electronics technician and member of the patient care team, responsible for the technical management of highly sophisticated electronics, life safety and other specialty systems including, but not limited to fire alarm control panels, fire alarm detection and signaling components and devices, intrusion detection, surveillance/CCTV and security alarm systems, electronic/magnetic/digital card reader and access control, UPS monitoring, medical gas (air, oxygen and vacuum), dental air, dental oral evacuation, facility radio communications, overhead paging and public address, electronic operated doors, digital/illuminated signage, facility network and digital cable installation, Building Automation, audio/video/television/telecommunications, integrated projection, TV monitors installation/maintenance, nurse call, patient wandering, GetWell Network, electronically operated patient beds, bed lifts and stretchers.
The incumbent performs duties of a broad scope and complexity including analyzing, diagnosing, developing, and planning. The incumbent troubleshoots and corrects malfunctions on complex instrumentation, and microprocessor based systems that generally utilize state-of-the-art technology, have vitally interrelated and sometimes dispersed subsystems. These equipment systems are assembled from numerous constituent subsystems, which may be in themselves, devices with an advanced degree of complexity. These systems are identifiable by their complex, computer-based electronics and by the need for technical support that extends well beyond maintenance and repair.
Engages in construction, installation, maintenance, repair, and modification of all types of electronic and communication equipment. This includes mobile, portable, and fixed radio frequency transmitters and receivers, digital and analog microwave transceivers, digital and analog multiplex carrier equipment, mobile data, satellite, vehicular emergency lighting and siren systems, radio consoles and related systems.
Analyzes electronic problems and makes repairs at both system and component levels. Provides preventive maintenance of communications equipment and systems. Operates and maintains digital and analog electronic test equipment. Installs and repairs antennas and wiring on communications towers, vehicles, and buildings. Interprets technical diagrams and instructions: prepares systems and equipment documentation; maintains service records and prepares related reports. Provides technical support to data services; orders parts, services, and equipment as necessary. Stays up to date with all local, state, and federal codes.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. The incumbent works under conditions of extreme stress caused by the nature of the mission which often involves the life and well-being of patients. He/she must be able to interact effectively with all levels of medical center staff and must remain calm and analytical even under stress. The incumbent must have thorough knowledge of different department's operational and infection control procedures to enable him/her to function effectively while responding to equipment or facility related issues actively affecting patient care. Performance of the incumbent's duties can be physically demanding involving walking, sitting, some standing, and extended periods of intense concentration. Lifting of objects between 10 and 40 pounds is common, and on occasion lifting of heavier objects is necessary. Tips to satellite outpatient clinics are sometimes necessary and will involve transportation via station vehicle or privately owned vehicle.
Working Conditions: The work is performed in clinical settings. Special safety precautions must be taken when working in non-ionizing radiation and infectious environments for both the well being of the incumbent, staff and veterans. Incumbent will occasionally work with hazardous materials (i.e., aerosol solvents and other materials used in performing duties necessitating that proper hazardous material safety practices be followed, and in conditions that warranty the use of personal safety protection equipment and universal precautions. Travel is required and incumbent may be required to work beyond normal duty hours. Circumstances may require the specialist to travel to distant outpatient clinics. Work space may be limited and some work may need to be performed in a vehicle such as a van.
