This is a Secretary (OA) position at the Birmingham VA Medical Center to be located in Irondale, AL.
Duties
The incumbent will serve as a Secretary (Office Automation) for the Birmingham VA Medical Center in Irondale, AL. The incumbent will perform secretarial duties in support of the Chief of Mental Health service line as well as their subordinate staff. Duties to include:
Performs office automation duties using Microsoft Office applications such as Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Types correspondence from rough drafts, notes, oral instructions, and/or original composition; reviews correspondence for procedural and grammatical accuracy.
Provides general clerical mail and correspondence services such as preparing a variety of recurring reports, reviewing ongoing correspondence for proper attachments, and/or consolidating/coordinating submittal of information.
Schedules appointments, coordinates meetings and travel arrangements, and provides general calendar maintenance.
Attends meetings and/or conferences, records information being presented, and composes meeting minutes for dissemination.
Orders supplies and equipment through appropriate channels.
Maintains extensive filing system, including correspondence, reports, meeting minutes, Medical Center memos, etc.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00AM - 4:30PM
Telework: Ad hoc basis only. Telework eligibility will be discussed during the interview process.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 01/19/2024.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet the Time-In-Grade requirement by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-6 grade position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-5 grade. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that demonstrates your Time-In-Grade eligibility must be submitted with your application. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate that you possess one-year of Time-In-Grade, as required by this job announcement. In that instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates the one-year Time-In-Grade requirement has been met. Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.
Specialized Experience Requirement: You must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade GS-5 that is directly related to the work of this position. Examples of specialized experience for this position include:
Performing clerical/administrative duties in an office environment;
Answering and directing phone calls;
Maintaining files/records;
Using a computer to prepare correspondence and other clerical tasks;
Using Microsoft Office applications such as Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Physical Requirements: The work of this position is sedentary. There may be some walking, standing, bending, and carrying of light items such papers or books. No specific physical demands are required to perform the work of this position.
