You will serve as a HIGH VOLTAGE ELECTRICIAN in the PUBLIC WORKS DIVISION in the of NAVFAC SOUTHWEST.

Duties

You will install, modify, and replace generation and distribution equipment in substations, power-generating facilities, transformer vaults, or distribution centers. You will install and maintain overhead and underground distribution lines as assigned. You will set correct wire tension or sag in accordance with strength and weight of wire. You will use test devices (e.g., voltmeters, ohmmeters, meggers) and electrical tools to conduct basic checks for continuity, resistance, voltage, shorts, insulation breakdowns, and grounds. You will troubleshoot distribution circuits to locate shorts, opens, grounds, crosses, damage, capacitance imbalances, and cable breaks. You will troubleshoot distribution circuits, generating, and controlling equipment to locate and correct the cause of outages.

• You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver’s license and the ability to obtain a Commercial Driver's License.

• You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
• Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.
• You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
• This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
• This position will require shift work, overtime work, and/or be called back.

Qualifications

The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION 1) Installing transformers, capacitors, insulators, switches, circuit breakers, and fuses in connection with main distribution lines; 2) Using test equipment such as ohmmeters, voltage testers, clamp-on ammeters, and meggers to determine high resistance, grounds and open circuits; 3) Climbing poles to string overhead wire; and 4) Driving bucket trucks to install and repair electrical equipment and cables.
