This position is located in the Veterinary Services (VS), Diagnostics & Biologics (D&B), Administrative Services Unit. The Transportation Assistant is responsible for coordinating domestic and foreign travel and transportation arrangements and assisting all D&B employees who are traveling.
Duties
The duties may include, but are not limited to:
Interprets regulations, laws, policies, procedures and other information applicable to travel and transportation management including domestic and foreign travel.
Research rules and regulations in travel situations and determines the application of rules, regulations, and procedures in order to accomplish tasks.
Participates in meetings to disseminate information related to travel training and assistance, as requested, to new employees on using the National Finance Center's (NFC) online travel system.
Coordinates problems encountered with the online travel and contacts NFC Information Center to seek solutions.
Assists employees in obtaining a Government Travel Card, passports, country visa and clearance.
Provides technical assistance to DB Travelers with Concur, or the current electronic travel voucher system.
Reviews travel documents processed for DB employees for compliance with regulations.
Follows established internal office policy guidelines for processing authorizations, vouchers, ticket purchases and travel itineraries.
Requirements
- You must be a US Citizen or US National.
- Individuals who were born male after 12/31/1959 must be Selective Service registered or exempt.
- Subject to satisfactory adjudication of background investigation and/or fingerprint check.
- Successful completion of one-year probationary period, unless previously served.

- The work is mostly sedentary performed in comfortable indoor settings such as offices, meeting rooms, or training facilities that involve commonplace risks and discomforts and require no unusual safety precautions.
- Work may involve some walking, standing, bending, or carrying of light items; however, no special demands are required, and alterations of physical requirements can be easily accommodated.
Qualifications
Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement, including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.
FOR THE GS-07 LEVEL: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-06 level) that may have been obtained in the private or public (local, county, state, Federal) sectors which demonstrates:
Interpreting regulations, directives, policies, and procedures to arrange, monitor and manage domestic and international travel activities which conform to the organization's management and requirements.
Researching rules in complex travel situations and independently determining the application of rules and procedures in order to accomplish task.
Providing clarification of policies and procedures pertaining to both domestic and foreign travel.
Note: There is no education substitution for this grade level.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
