Duties
These positions serve as temporary seasonal Physical Science Technicians for the Paria River District.
Conducts proactive inventories and field excavations for the purpose of paleontology resource protection and site documentation.
Surveys field sites for data and other information for entry into databases and/or geospatial automated information systems in support of the paleontology and other resource programs.

Prepares reports and answers inquiries, where considerable knowledge and understanding is required to make proper interpretation.
Assists with geological and paleontological educational programs at visitor centers, in the paleontology laboratory, in local classrooms, virtual platforms, or other outlets as necessary.
Provides technical support involving practical knowledge of paleontology.
Prepares paleontological specimens for research, curation and/or display and educational purposes.
Surveys field sites for data and other information for entry into databases and/or geospatial automated information systems in support of the paleontology and other resource programs.
Requirements
- U.S. Citizenship is required.

Qualifications
Selective Placement Factors: This position requires a special qualification that has been determined to be essential to perform the duties and will be used as a screen out element. Those who do not provide evidence they possess the following selective factor(s) will be rated not qualified:
Possess (or obtain within 30 days of entrance on duty) and maintain a valid state driver's license while employed in this position.

To qualify at the GS-05 level you must meet the following:
Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 level equivalent in difficulty and complexity to perform the duties of a Physical Science Technician. Qualifying specialized experience includes: assist in conducting field excavations and/or laboratory preparation and documentation, and practices of paleontology.
OR Education: To qualify based on education you must have four (4) years (120 semester hours) of education above high school, leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in an appropriate field of physical science, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as physical science, engineering, or any branch of mathematics, except financial and commercial mathematics.
OR Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate undergraduate education.
To qualify at the GS-06 level you must meet the following:
Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 level equivalent in difficulty and complexity to perform the duties of a Physical Science Technician. Qualifying specialized experience includes: conduct, under supervision, field excavations, laboratory preparation, curation and documentation, data collection, reporting, and practices of paleontology.
OR Education: To qualify based on education you must have one (1) full year (18 semester hours) of graduate-level education in a related field of study.
OR Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the difficulty and complexity to do the work of this position.
To qualify at the GS-07 level you must meet the following:
Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-06 level equivalent in difficulty and complexity to perform the duties of a Physical Science Technician. Qualifying specialized experience includes: independently conduct and/or initiate field surveys, excavations, laboratory preparation, curation and documentation, data collection, reporting, and practices of paleontology.
OR Education: To qualify based on education you must have one (1) full year (18 semester hours) of graduate-level education in a related field of study.
OR Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the difficulty and complexity to do the work of this position.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement.
Physical Demands: The work is a mixture of sedentary work in the office and field work that involves some physical exertion, such as long periods of standing; walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; possibly recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities; or requiring lifting of moderately heavy items.
Work Environment: The work involves a mixture of work in the office which is well lit, heated, and air conditioned and where normal safety precautions are adequate, and work in the field under conditions of inclement weather or other discomforts where normal safety precautions must be observed.
Education
Applicants may qualify for these positions based on experience, education, or an equivalent combination as described in the Qualifications section of this announcement.
Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-7.
