Duties
Assists automotive mechanics in performance of maintenance and repair on all combustion powered vehicles.
Helps with repairs that can be accomplished by removing, replacing, adjusting, or cleaning defective parts or components such as fouled spark plugs, worn brake shoes, water pumps, engine gaskets belts and hoses, etc.
Under the direct supervision of the automotive mechanic or higher grade worker, removes and replaces with standard parts, items such as spark plugs, fan belts, starters, carburetors, fuel pumps, water pumps, mufflers, tail pipes, etc.
Assists in making settings and adjustments such as setting distributor and voltage regulator points, gaping spark plugs, setting engine idle and time, and taking up on brakes.
Observes environmental, safety, and security rules and regulations. Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements

- A one year probationary period may be required.
- Satisfactorily complete an employment verification (E-Verify) check.
- Must be willing to accept a varying or rotating shift to include nights, weekends and holidays.
- The dual compensation guidelines DO NOT apply to this position. All GS and NAF employees whether full time or part time are eligible to apply for this position.
- Medical Examination is required. Physical efforts include standing, stooping, stretching, crawling, working in tight spaces and uncomfortable positions, lifting up to 40 pounds unassisted.
Qualifications
1. Possess a high school diploma or the equivalent from a trade school.
OR
2. Possess creditable job related experience in automotive repair.
In addition to one of the above:
3. Must have 6 months of progressively general experience and a minimum of 6 months of specialized experience in general automotive work.
Skills and Knowledge:
1. A basic knowledge of automotive repair such as could be gained at the high school or trade school level.
2. Ability to use standard and metric automotive hand and powered tools.
3. Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
4. A driver's license is required.

Highly Preferred Candidates:
1. Possess a New York State Inspector's License.
The certification must be reflected on your resume and your certification uploaded at the time of application to be considered a highly preferred candidate.
