The Health Technician (HT) position is located at Jackson VA Clinic, Jackson, Tennessee. The HT is a member of the Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) and works under the direction of a Registered Nurse. The HT is responsible for observing, recording, and reporting changes in the patient's condition, as well as assisting in the development and revision of the patient-driven holistic life care plan.

Duties

The Health Technician (HT) is an integral member of the Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT). The incumbent responsibilities encompass making observations, documenting patient care and responses, and promptly seeking assistance and guidance from a Registered Nurse (RN) or medical providers of conditions requiring higher-level intervention. Additionally, the HT generates and maintains reports and records for nursing care provided in the Primary Care Clinics. The incumbent's duties include but are not limited to: Demonstrates understanding of age- and population-specific characteristics that affect the health care needs of the Veteran. Promptly recognizes urgent or emergent patient care situations, seeks assistance and effectively intervenes as directed when appropriate. Interacts and communicates appropriately with patients and family members. Demonstrates professional behavior (i.e., respect others, collegiality, ability to accept constructive criticism), effective communication and interpersonal skills. Adheres to principles of infection control, safety, and universal precautions. Possesses knowledge of proper handling and pre-cleaning of reusable medical equipment. Demonstrates competence utilizing special equipment needed to perform job duties. Follows policy and procedures related to fire and disaster drills, safety and security measures. Demonstrates initiative in assisting the core and expanded teams. Maintains confidentiality of electronic, written, and/or verbal patient information. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 01/29/2024. Individual Occupational Requirement for Health Aid and Technician Series (0640): Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. In addition to the IOR, candidates must also meet one of the following requirements: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-5 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Qualifying specialized experience includes: Knowledge of the Business Office in the following areas: Outpatient processing, eligibility, DHCP applications, clinical, and ancillary services. Basic knowledge of CPT-4 and ICD-10-CM coding. Knowledge of medical terminology and usage covering the full range of general medical, surgical, pharmaceutical, hospital-specific terms, medical abstracts, and abbreviations. Knowledge of anatomy and physiology to properly understand the major anatomical systems and related disease processes. Knowledge of the VA medical records program including medical record forms, filing sequences, formats, and content requirements. Knowledge of analyzing and correlating laboratory test results, procedures, and treatments with diagnoses. Knowledge of computer systems; VISTA, CPRS, word processing, spreadsheets, etc. ** The preferred candidate would possess IV certification, Microsoft application, and Basic Life Support Certification.** OR Substitution of Education - Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the one year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED) OR Combination of Education and Specialized Experience: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an equal combination of specialized experience and graduate education. PLEASE NOTE: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: Generally, the work does not involve special physical demands. Duties are performed primarily in the Primary Care Clinic areas and incumbent must be able to travel to laboratory, x-ray, and other treatment areas with ease. There is a potential for extended periods of sitting, standing, walking, and carrying items weighing up to 20 pounds, pen-based computing devices, medical records, manuals, computer keyboarding as indicated. There will at times be the need to assist patients in transferring (i.e. wheelchair to exam table) and incumbent will need to be well versed in the use of safe patient handling equipment.
