These positions are located within Environmental Management Service at the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System in Los Angeles, CA, and will be responsible for operating farm-type tractors and towed or attached equipment to maintain grounds.
Duties
Major Duties:
Frequently operates towed or attached equipment from the seat of the tractor through hydraulic of mechanical controls.
Operates field type four-wheeled tractors, dump trucks, and street sweepers with up to eight (8) forward gears.
Installs or attaches various implements and manual operation controls on tractors, making mechanical adjustments consistent with functions and work the implements to perform.
Skills apply to the use of hand and power tools and equipment to perform tasks such as: lawn edging, pruning, and trimming hedges, shrubs and trees, removing weeds and grass.
Prepares sod and grounds areas for planting of grass, removing and transplanting shrubs and plants, pick up and disposal of brush, trash and debris.
Applies fertilizers, herbicides, and insecticides, according to instructions.
Operates hydraulic tailgate lift, platform trucks, pallet jacks, and forklift.
Assists in fence repair, installation of parking lot bumpers, black top repair.
Operates a utility truck and extending boom assembly usually from ground level or truck bed level from 0 to 40 ft high elevations and occasionally operating the unit when specifically qualified as an operator.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 6:00am to 2:30pm

Qualifications
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: PHYSICAL EFFORT: Applicant operates tractors in all types of terrain (steep and level) and along roadways. Applicant must be able to do heavy strenuous lifting (50) pounds, stooping, bending, climbing and working in cramped positions. Applicant makes more frequent arm and leg movements.Applicants work is performed in all types of weather normally on flat and rolling terrain. Applicant is subject to possible injury from equipment overturning. Applicants job assignment subjects them to various hazards, such as strains from lifting dangers involved in handling chemicals and other liquids, carrying furniture and appliances up and down stairs and is subject to the normal hazards of driving motor vehicles. Applicants must also observe safe operational movement of the vehicles and equipment to avoid damage to buildings, trees, equipment operated, irrigation or other above and underground systems. Applicant performs preventive maintenance on all equipment as assigned. Applicant must be especially observant of pedestrians and patients. Applicant is exposed to engine exhaust fumes, dust and grime, also grass and pollens and as such allergies may develop, or these conditions may aggravate existing allergies. Applicant is also physically subjected to lifting and movement hazards.
