A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected. The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay. These positions are temporary and may not exceed 1039 hours (six months) in a service year. They may be terminated sooner or extended depending on management needs.

Duties

Duty station clarification: For positions at Brooks Camp, apply under location Lake and Peninsula County. For positions at Coal Creek Camp, apply under location Circle Hot Springs. For positions at Kennecott, apply under location McCarthy. As a Maintenance Worker, you will perform work involved in the maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings and related utilities, requiring the use of a variety of trade practices associated with occupations such as carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical, cement work, painting, and other related trades. Duties include: Perform routine maintenance and repair of ground, exterior structures, buildings, equipment, and related utilities. Assist higher graded maintenance workers in the performance of their work. Perform carpentry repairs using simple measures and hand tools on such tasks as replacing broken planks on picnic tables; broken windows using precut stock; minor adjustments or replacing hinges, latches, and catches. Perform minor painting using brush and roller according to specific instructions on projects. Perform minor plumbing repairs such as tightening or replacing in-kind fittings and fixtures which do not require custom fitting or solder joints; replaces faucet washers; unplugs drains using a plunger; replaces liquid petroleum gas bottles. Receive, upload and process incoming shipments according to established procedures. Reports discrepancies and damage to others responsible for such items. Perform routine maintenance on campground sites and trails using hand tools to re-grade and reset barriers to restore areas to original appearances. Collect trash. Operate a light truck to pick up supplies and to transport materials to and from work sites while assisting on project work. Clean and service chemical toilets, restrooms, and other campground or visitor facilities. Makes minor repairs as needed and refers problems to higher graded workers. Denali National Park and Preserve (DENA) - Denali Park, Alaska - Anticipated employment period is April to September. Gates of the Arctic National Park (GAAR) - Bettles, Alaska - Anticipated employment period is May to October. Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve (GLBA) - Bartlett Cove, Alaska - Anticipated employment period is April to October. Katmai National Park and Preserve (KATM) - Brooks Camp, Alaska - Anticipated employment period is April to September. Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park (KLGO) - Skagway, Alaska - Anticipated employment period is April to October. Lake Clark National Park and Preserve (LACL) - Port Alsworth, Alaska - Anticipated employment period is May to October. Sitka National Historical Park (SITK) - Sitka, Alaska - Anticipated employment period is April to September. Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve (WRST) - Copper Center, Alaska - Anticipated employment period is May to September. Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve (WRST) - Kennecott, Alaska - Anticipated employment period is May to September. Apply to McCarthy, Alaska if you are interested in working at Kennecott. To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors: Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision. (SCREEN OUT) Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc. Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic). Use of Measuring Instruments. Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (includes blueprint reading). Ability to Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment. Knowledge of Materials. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Continued from the Requirements section: Special requirement for Kennecott (McCarthy): Employees must pass a pulmonary respiratory resistance test to determine the physical ability to perform the work required as a condition for appointment. All employees on site are subject to an initial medical examination and periodic blood tests as required by OSHA 29 CFR 1926.62 (at government expense). Lead is known to be present in the Kennecott area, primarily in the form of paint dust. As determined through air monitoring, respirators may be required. Respirators must be worn in compliance with 29 CFR 1910.134, which requires a good face seal. Presence of facial hair, glasses, etc. are prohibited if it cannot be proven that such conditions do not prevent that requirement. Overnight travel is not anticipated for Copper Center, Denali Park, Kennecott (McCarthy), Sitka or Slana. For the remaining duty stations, you may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 15 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.

Education

There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.
