This position performs ongoing patient care duties in the Emergency Department located at the Southern Veterans Affairs (VA) Arizona Healthcare System in Tucson, Arizona.

Duties

***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** This is a full-time, TEMPORARY (not-to-exceed 24 months) position. This appointment may be renewed for additional service in accordance with Agency needs. Temporary appointments are limited to one year or less although they may be extended for a second year.. Temporary positions do not offer health or life insurance benefits and may be terminated at any time before the expiration date. The appointment to a temporary position does not confer eligibility for promotion or reassignment to other positions or the ability to be non-competitively converted to permanent employment. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to: These duties are not all inclusive and require the demonstration of appropriate training and documented competence prior to their unrestricted performance. All candidates must have current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) training before they begin working in the Emergency Department. May assist with or perform other related technical health care procedures under the supervision of the Emergency Department Physicians as competency is demonstrated and documented. Provides assessment and management of ambulatory patients seen in the Emergency Department. Involves obtaining patient health history, chief complaints, medication history, and identification of health related conditions that may impact the patient's health status. Evaluates patients for emergency medical conditions, order appropriate diagnostic studies and perform a wide range of treatment procedures under the direction of the supervising physician. Assists in behavioral/psychiatric situations to include crisis intervention, management of aggressive or suicidal psychiatric patients, and one-to-one observations. Assists Emergency Department Physicians with complex, specialized, and potentially life threatening procedures such as defibrillation, cardioversions, insertion of chest drainage tubes, or initiation of mechanical ventilation to restore normal physiological function or prevent deterioration of patient's condition. Operates specialized medical equipment such as defibrillators, electrocardiographs, and oxygen apparatus. Assesses patient status and keeps physician informed of any change or need for additional treatment. Performs other duties assigned. DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received. You will be rated on the following Competencies as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position: ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position. ~AND~ To qualify for this position, you must meet one of the following minimal requirements: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: At least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-6) in the Federal Service that has given me the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of this position. Specialized experience includes: assisting in behavioral/psychiatric situations in an emergency setting; initiates cardiopulmonary resuscitation (Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and use of automatic external defibrillator (AED); operates specialized medical equipment such as defibrillators, electrocardiographs, and oxygen apparatus; obtains patient health history, chief complaints, medication history, and identification of health related conditions that may impact the patient's health status; evaluating patients for emergent/non-emergent medical conditions; ordering and/or performing appropriate diagnostic studies (i.e. vital signs, EKG, etc.); performing interventions based upon patient symptoms and established protocols/standards; assisting in behavioral/psychiatric situations; and assisting Emergency Department Physicians with complex, specialized, and potentially-life threatening procedures; and administration of: Oxygen, Basic IV fluids, nebulized medications, intramuscular meds/immunizations/vaccines; independently recognized life threatening situations and act to correct these according to established national or facility protocols. NOTE: Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. ~OR~ EDUCATION: Successfully completed one (1) year of graduate level education (or 18 semester hours) that is directly related to the work of the position to be filled. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. NOTE: Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation. ~OR~ COMBINATION: Equivalent combinations of specialized experience and successfully completed graduate education as described above to meet the total experience requirements to qualify at this grade level. Diagnostic Medical TestingEducation and TrainingEmergency CareMedical Information IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Requirements: The work involves extended periods of heavy moving and lifting of patients. Generally, the work requires recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, and positioning of patients. Work Environment : On a regular and recurring basis, employee is exposed to infection and contagious diseases requiring the use of universal precautions. As part of the Rapid Response Team the incumbent may be exposed to all types of weather conditions, and face risks and discomforts at the scene of accidents, to include the possibility of noxious fumes and dangerous substances, requiring the employee to comply with special safety and health precautions and/or to use protective gear.
