This position is located in the United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, Plant Science Research in Raleigh, NC.
In this position, you will be responsible for serving as part of a research team conducting plant and seed research.
This is a term, time-limited appointment with an initial duration no less than 13 months and can be extended up to a total of 10 years.
Duties
Adapt, modify, or develop new techniques and/or procedures to satisfy the needs of the plant and seed research project.
Process samples and record data from studies on plants or seeds.
Participate in one or more phases of the plant and seed research process by performing a variety of complex technical duties, in a laboratory, field, or greenhouse environment.
Use and maintain specialized field equipment (planters, combine harvesters, weather stations, etc.) and benchtop devices (near-infrared spectrophotometer, grain sheller, etc.) for plant or seed research.
Tabulate, statistically analyze and summarize data using personal computers and software packages.
Requirements
- You must be a US Citizen or US National.
- Males born after 12/31/1959 must be Selective Service registered or exempt.

GS-07:
Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-07 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-06 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience collecting, preparing, or evaluating plant samples; analyzing experimental data; and maintaining or calibrating specialized equipment.
OR
Education: One full year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related. Related courses may include plant science, agronomy, botany, agricultural science, or environmental science.
OR
A combination of graduate level education and experience as described above.
GS-08:
Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-08 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-07 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience participating in a research project related to plants; managing experimental data with databases; and performing routine and recurring techniques and studies using a variety of specialized field equipment.

Education: Two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related. Related courses may include plant science, agronomy, botany, agricultural science, or environmental science.
OR
A combination of graduate level education and experience as described above.
GS-09:
Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-09 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-08 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience setting up and conducting an experiment or research project related to seeds and plants; collecting, preparing, and evaluating seed and plant samples for sequencing and supporting records; and managing experimental data with databases.

Education: Two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related. Related courses may include plant science, agronomy, botany, agricultural science, or environmental science.
OR
A combination of graduate level education and experience as described above.
