This position is located in the United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, Small Grains and Potato Germplasm Research Unit in Aberdeen, ID.
In this position, you will be responsible for serving as part of a research team conducting plant research in a laboratory, greenhouse and field environment.
Duties
Collect, prepare, evaluate, and verify plant samples and supporting records.
Adapt, modify, or develop new techniques and/or procedures to satisfy the needs of the research project.
Maintain, calibrate, and modify complex/specialized equipment and automated systems used for test and evaluation procedures.
Maintain research records, compile, and organize data and other information from various sources.
Assist in one or more phases of research related to plants by performing a variety of technical duties, in a laboratory, field, or greenhouse environment.
Contribute ideas towards the planning, sequencing, executing, and documenting of the technical aspects of the research project.
Tabulate, statistically analyze and summarize data using personal computers and software packages.

GS-06
Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-06 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-05 which is directly related to the work of this position, and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is collecting plant samples; keeping detailed records of experimental data; and performing routine and recurring techniques using a variety of specialized equipment.
OR
Education: One full year of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related. Related degrees may include Biochemistry, Plant Pathology, Plant Physiology, Horticulture, Genetics, or Microbiology.
OR
A combination of specialized experience and education as described above.
GS-07
Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-07 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-06 which is directly related to the work of this position, and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience conducting an experiment or research related to plants; collecting and evaluating plant samples; and preparing data or reports that summarize results of research data.

Education: One full year of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related. Related degrees may include Biochemistry, Plant Pathology, Plant Physiology, Horticulture, Genetics, or Microbiology.

Physical demands
The work requires some physical exertion, such as regular and recurring walking or bending. In many situations the duration of the activity (such as most of a work day) contributes to the arduous nature of the job.
