You will serve as a Woodworker in the Traffic Section, Material Control Branch, Supply and Information Services Division of NAVAL RESEARCH LABORATORY.
The Woodworker constructs shipping containers for numerous items including extremely fragile and often irregular shaped prototype research instruments, hardware, machinery, and hazardous materials.
Duties
You will take necessary measurements and prepare patterns or templates considering such factors as size, shape, weight, fragility, need for shock mounting or special cradles.
You will install, fit and secure equipment and construct a full range of standard and nonstandard containers.
You will make judgments and decisions within the framework of oral instructions, hand-written sketches and blueprints.
You will provide technical advice and assistance and plan and carry out projects from initial layout to completion.
You will be responsible for the packaging and certification of hazardous materials for shipment.
Requirements

- You will be required to obtain and maintain a current fork-lift license.
- You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
- You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
- You must have the ability to obtain a current commercial driver's license-minimum Class C with hazmat endorsement (CDL) .
- Selectee must attend and graduate from the School of Military Defense Packaging of Hazardous Materials. Recertification is required every two years.
- Selectee must successfully complete training for Wood Packaging Materials (WPM) to promote, implement, monitor, and measure procedures to ensure the elimination of pests using wood as a host. Recertification is required every two years.
- You will be required to lift/carry items up to 50 pounds.
- This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
Qualifications

Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability and experience to do the work of a WG-4604-09 Woodworker without more than normal supervision performing the following duties:1) taking measurements and preparing patterns; 2) making, fitting and installing braces to secure equipment; 3) preparing and constructing containers, bins and gates; 4) fabricating and modifying models made from wood and wood substitutes; 5) cutting, shaping, forming and finishing shipping crates by using precision tools and hand tools; and 6) packaging and certification of hazardous materials for shipment by various modes of transportation.
