This is a temporary, excepted service position is limited to law students in their first year of law school, located in the Northwest Regional Office in the Federal Trade Commission. The FTC enforces federal consumer protection laws and federal antitrust laws. The goal is to provide representation in legal casework by assisting attorneys in obtaining factual information to support legal arguments and thereby aid the work of the division's litigation efforts.

Duties

Serves in the capacity of a Student Trainee (Honors Legal Intern). Performs duties under the supervision of higher graded attorneys who give instructions as to the objectives and results to be obtained, and is available for guidance as to methods and procedures to be followed during progress of assignments and compliance with policies, procedures, and regulations. The incumbent assist attorneys working on cases or legal issues in one or more of the following or related areas: trade regulation and trade law enforcement antitrust law practices including merger and non-merger activity administrative law, Freedom of Information, and agency legal counsel consumer protection law practices including case selection and investigation The incumbent performs a variety of legal duties such as: researching legal issues which are factually complex drafting pleadings discovery requests and responses assisting in the development and review of drafts of letters, memoranda, and legal documents including complaints, subpoenas, and orders for use by a higher graded attorney participating in administrative or judicial hearings and pretrial conferences assisting with/in the conducting of preliminary review of sanctions, practices, violations, or complaints leading interview calls and summarizing findings through written reports participating in investigations and studies to obtain facts and information that can be used for drafting trade regulation rules and guides assisting in the development of outreach activities with local business, government and consumer representatives to further education or enforcement efforts

Qualifications

To be eligible, you must be currently enrolled or accepted for enrollment on at least a half-time basis in an accredited high school, college (including 4-year colleges/universities, community colleges, and junior colleges); professional, technical, vocational, or trade school; advanced degree programs; or other qualifying educational institution pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate. Certificate programs are defined as post-secondary education, in a qualifying educational institution, equivalent to at least one academic year of full-time study that is part of an accredited college-level, technical, trade, vocational, or business school curriculum. Veterans' preference applies in the hiring process. In order to receive preference in hiring, you must clearly identify your claim for veterans' preference when you apply. Must maintain student eligibility and enrollment for the duration of the internship. If graduation from an undergraduate program is expected by Spring 2024, must be accepted for enrollment to a fall graduate program and able to provide verification of this acceptance. To qualify for the Student Trainee (Legal Intern) position at the GS-07:- Students must possess a 3.0 cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) a 4.0 scale (however, we recognize that some law schools do not provide a GPA).- Students must have completed one year of law schoolby the beginning of summer session 2024.- Students must be continuing in legal studies throughout the summer and/or into the Fall of 2024 to be eligible.- Students graduating in the Spring of 2024 are not eligible. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

This position has an education requirement. You must submit a copy of your transcripts . Unofficial transcripts will be accepted in the application package; however, official transcripts will be required prior to receiving an official offer.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
