The primary purpose of this position is: To provide clinical nursing care in the Flight Medicine Clinic in the Medical Treatment Facility. Performs patient check-in, triage/telephone triage, screening, emergency care, diagnostic tasks, and patient counseling. The incumbent is also responsible for Aerospace administrative processes and records management.

Duties

Provides comprehensive professional nursing care to Flight Medicine patients with medical, gynecological, and minor surgical procedures ranging from normal to those having complex complications requiring sophisticated, highly technical care and treatment. Performs procedures, treatments, and medication administration. Participates in continuing education programs to update and/or maintain skills and knowledge to meet annual requirements. Receives and handles inquiries from outside agencies, leadership, and patients, and assists in record management.

  • Must possess a current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certificate
  • May be required to work shifts or augment clinical nursing support during the absence of other team nurses due to illness, leave, or deployment

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Technical and Medical Support Positions, Nurse Series 0610 Plus IOR. BASIC REQUIREMENT OR INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT: A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, or associate degree in nursing from an accredited professional nursing educational program (required). This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts. AND A current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. NOTE: You must submit a copy of official transcripts and a copy of your license. Employees currently assigned to positions in this occupational series as of September 2017 will be considered to have met the basic requirements for the position occupied. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: I have 1 year of specialized nursing experience at the GS-07 grade level or equivalent (under other pay systems or in the Federal service), which has equipped me with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position (and is typically in or related to the position to be filled in the federal service). My experience includes: professional knowledge and skills of established concepts, principles, and practices to perform the full range of nursing assignments in providing nursing care in general medical and surgical wards, out-patient departments, gynecological, obstetrical, or intensive care units for cardiac, pediatric, post-operative, or respiratory patients; knowledge of a wide range of medical disorders such as oncology, neurology, cardiovascular, thoracic surgery, general surgery, orthopedic, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, urology, neurosurgical, gynecological surgery complications and indicated therapeutic intervention required; knowledge of a variety of pharmacological agents used in patient treatment, the desired effects, side effects, and complications of their use. (NOTE: This same experience must be well-described in the application/resume that you complete and submit in addition to answering this questionnaire.) OR EDUCATION: I have a master's degree in professional nursing from an accredited educational program (required). This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. NOTE: You must submit a copy of official transcripts and a copy of your license. FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-07 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-09 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. NOTE: Applicants applying as VEOA candidates who are current GS civil service employees or are prior GS civil service employees within the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Knowledge of professional nursing care theories, principles, practices, and procedures to perform nursing assignments of moderate difficulty and respond to patient emergencies. 2. Professional knowledge of a broad range of ambulatory care evidenced-based standards and clinical practice guidelines, military and occupational health-related standards and requirements, and applicable governmental/regulatory agencies. 3. Professional knowledge of a broad range of ambulatory care evidenced-based standards and clinical practice guidelines, military and occupational health-related standards and requirements, and applicable governmental/regulatory agencies. 4. Knowledge of a variety of pharmacological agents used in patient treatment, the desired effects, side effects, and complications of their use. 5. Skill in setting up and operating specialized medical equipment such as AEDs, resuscitators, cardiac monitoring devices, EKG units, oxygen analyzers, ventilators, and electronic fetal monitoring devices. 6. Ability to communicate orally and in writing with a diverse group of individuals. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
