These positions are located within the Environmental Management Services Division of Kansas City VA Medical Center. This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT. Duties

This occupation has been authorized for a Veterans Health Administration enterprise-wide Critical Skills Incentive (CSI). Candidates may be eligible for a lump sum CSI. The amount of lump sum CSI is determined based on appointment date and may be pro-rated as determined by the end date of the CSI. Eligible candidates will be required to sign a service agreement agreeing to an obligated service period and failure to complete the obligated service period may result in a debt for the unearned portion of the CSI. The incumbent is assigned to or provides assistance in the Central Linen Room, Surgical Pack Unit, or Patient Assistance (Clothing Room). Major duties include, but are not limited to: · Receives, unloads, and checks daily receipts for linen deliveries Delivers turnaround carts to the shelf or to pre-determined areas · Collects soiled linens and prepare for pick up Cleans and sanitizes linen carts, floors, etc. Delivers mattresses, pillows, and other linen and specialty items as required Assembles items and prepare surgical packs Receives, receipts, safekeeps, and releases personal effects and valuables Coordinates articles for repair Operates manual marking machine to identify hospital linens. Classifies and segregates soiled articles into groups according to the various washing requirements. Removes semi-dried large items from hand trucks. Shakes out creases and sorts articles of like types into groups to facilitate feeding through the flatwork ironer. Feeds sheets, towels, etc., into the flatwork ironer. Straightens the edges and smooths the wrinkles from the material as it is fed into the machine. Catches, folds, and stacks the articles as they emerge from the ironer. Separates the rough dried textiles (other than flatwork) by type and folds in accordance with established procedures. Checks for soiled items and those which require mending, referring them to the supervisor for further processing. Assists in the immediate hanging of durable press garments after removal from tumble dryer to eliminate wrinkles and facilitate processes. Folds rough dry textiles according to established procedures. Builds linen carts and delivers clean linen to patient care areas and other textiles to various areas of the Medical Center. Work Schedule: Full Time. Schedule to be determined by supervisor and subject to change based on the needs of the facility. Position Description Title/PD#: Laundry Worker/PD00000 Physical Requirements: Considerable physical effort is exerted while loading and unloading linen onto and off of trailer, picking up and loading soiled linens into turn around carts and delivering exchange carts. Turn around cards may weigh 500-700 pounds when filled. Soiled linen bags may weigh 40 pounds when filled. Moderate physical effort is exerted while lifting, bending and stooping while unloading and loading linen carts. Frequent lifting linens and linen packs weighing 15 - 25 pounds and pushing carts weighing 200 - 250 pounds. Moderate physical effort is expended when handling patient personal effects, such as luggage, trunks, boxes, TVs hanging clothes, etc.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement will be referred to the hiring official for further consideration. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
