About the Position: As Statistician/Data Scientist, incumbent will direct and assist research at Womack Army Medical Center (WAMC), a designated Defense Health Agency research institution located at a large US military installation.
Duties
As technical consultant and collaborator with research investigators, develop precedent-setting research designs for studies across all disciplines within the medical center, to include retrospective analyses of local and national databases.
Write or review statistical sections of study protocols, scientific manuscripts for publication, and grant proposals.
Recommend statistical methods based on a wide variety of possible approaches and a range of established methods.
Train researchers on topics related to research design and statistical methodology and statistical computing.
Direct and perform statistical analyses of large complex databases using advanced statistical programming.
Work consists of carrying out the technical aspects of various mathematical or statistical programs or activities, processes, and methods.
Develops monitoring and tracking programs to facilitate compliance with research regulations.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.
- This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is therefore subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education/experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Basic Requirements:
A. Degree: that included 15 semester hours in statistics (or in mathematics and statistics, provided at least 6 semester hours were in statistics), and 9 additional semester hours in one or more of the following: physical or biological sciences, medicine, education, or engineering; or in the social sciences including demography, history, economics, social welfare, geography, international relations, social or cultural anthropology, health sociology, political science, public administration, psychology, etc. Credit toward meeting statistical course requirements should be given for courses in which 50 percent of the course content appears to be statistical methods, e.g., courses that included studies in research methods in psychology or economics such as tests and measurements or business cycles, or courses in methods of processing mass statistical data such as tabulating methods or electronic data processing.

B. Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The experience should have included a full range of professional statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying statistical techniques such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes experience with statistical methods to conduct studies and analyze information to provide recommendations or advisories; Experience with statistical software to insert and retrieve data the leads to reportable and supportable information; Experience with performing analytical analysis or studies in a military medical community; Experience with drafting policies in response to statistical information to establish processes or changes to existing policies; Experience with compiling information to provide training on topic relative to research design and statistical methodology. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-12).
Education
FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
