This position is aligned under the Facility Service Line, at the VA Medical Center, Tomah, WI. The position is located in the Maintenance and Operations Section, Boiler Plant in Tomah, WI.
Duties
Duties include but may not be limited to:
Checks boilers and auxiliary type equipment hourly.
Operates the entire boiler plant to its maximum economy and efficiency.
Tests the emergency diesel generator monthly.
Collects and makes test of boiler water daily.
Applies knowledge of the entire system in order to locate problems and determine action necessary to maintain adequate steam production.
Work Schedule: Full Time, 8 hour rotating shifts, days, weekends and holidays.
Qualifications
EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements.
PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Operators are physically fit to perform assigned duties, such as working on high elevations, confined areas, heavy lifting and extreme temperatures. Incumbent frequently lifts and carries boiler parts and chemical supplies weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted and occasionally items weighing over 40 pounds with assistance of other workers or weight handling equipment.
WORK CONDITIONS:
Works mainly in the central steam generating plant but will be required to make rounds on the low-pressure campus boilers, to log operational parameters and perform safety device testing in order to maintain the low-pressure units. Subject to extreme noise from air compressors, rotating machinery, fans and motors, soot, dirt, grease, chemicals, oil, and fumes. Occasionally subject to the cuts and abrasions from the use of tools and equipment, possible burns from acids, caustics, hot water, steam and contact with boilers and high-pressure steam burst and heat.
