These positions will be located within the Great Plains Area - Indian Health Service. There MAY NOT be immediate vacancies at all locations. Interested applicants should check with the local Administrative Office concerning immediate employment needs. The primary function of these positions is to provide comprehensive medical care services.

Duties

Within Specialty area, assumes responsibility for the diagnosis, prevention, therapeutic treatment of geriatric, adult, adolescent, pediatric and/or infant patients and their families. Examines and diagnoses the health related conditions of individuals requesting care, refers individuals for consultation when appropriate, prescribes and carries out, or directs others in carrying out, appropriate therapy in conformance with approved clinical privileges. Educates individuals in the nature of health related conditions, recommended, and in the general promotion of health and the prevention of disease. Records patient-provider transactions in the problem oriented medical record format and completes required data collection instruments, referrals, and medical records as required. Assists in the provision of continuing education, on-the-job training, and orientation of Indian Health Service and Tribal staff as requested. Assists in the provision of technical assistance to Tribal and community groups as requested. Routine duties shall include providing medical care and public health services to individuals eligible for services provided by the IHS in homes, schools, clinics, job sites, and other community locations within the service unit. Physician's job necessitates providing appropriate, timely assistance and instruction, and advising other Physicians or other health care professionals on patient care safety, recommended diagnostic testing and medical care decision making and treatment. Works constructively and collaboratively with other health care professionals in attaining high standards of health care in compliance with IHS regulations and directives. Develops effective relationships with patients, maintaining cultural sensitivity when treating or assisting in patient care, or discussing any complaints from patients relating to treatment and standards of care.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): OPM Link: Medical Officer Series 0602 (opm.gov) Degree: Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine or equivalent from a school in the United States or Canada. This degree must have been accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association; Association of American Medical Colleges; Liaison Committee on Medical Education; Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. Degree from Foreign Medical School: A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school must provide education and medical knowledge equivalent to accredited schools in the United States. Evidence of equivalency to accredited schools in the United States is demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates(external link), a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country, or successful completion of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination. Licensure: Applicants must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician from a State, the District of Columbia, or a territory of the United States. Graduate Training: Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, a candidate must have had at least 1 year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a 1-year internship or the first year of a residency program in a hospital or an institution accredited for such training. An internship program involves broadly based clinical practice in which physicians acquire experience in treating a variety of medical problems under supervision (e.g., internal medicine, surgery, general practice, obstetrics-gynecology, and pediatrics). Such programs are in hospitals or other institutions accredited for internship training by a recognized body of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)(external link). A residency program involves training in a specialized field of medicine in a hospital or an institution accredited for training in the specialty by a recognized body of the American Medical Association(external link), (AMA) or Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)(external link). A fellowship program involves advanced training (beyond residency training) in a given medical specialty in either a clinical or research setting in a hospital or an institution accredited in the United States for such training. In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below- MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: GS-13 -- 3 years of graduate training in the specialty of the position to be filled or equivalent experience and training. GS-14 -- 4 years of graduate training in the specialty of the position to be filled or equivalent experience and training. GS-15 -- 5 years of graduate training in the specialty of the position to be filled or equivalent experience and training. Selective Placement Factor - The below qualification requirement is a SPF; and is required in addition to the minimum requirements. The SPF is determined to be essential to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position. Applicants who do not meet a SPF will be ineligible for selection consideration. Selective Placement Factor Board Certification: Board Certification has been determined to be important to perform the duties and responsibilities of this position. Board Certified in the physician's specialty by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) is a condition of employment. Or I have recently completed my Residency; thus I am Board Eligible and actively pursuing Board Certification in the Specialty to which applying. Time In Grade (Merit Promotion Candidates Only) Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
