The mission of the National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute (NZCBI) is to save species by using cutting-edge science, sharing knowledge and providing inspirational experiences for our guests.

Duties

The Entomologist will primarily be responsible for planning, establishing, and implementing Integrated Pest Management (IPM) to all animal and non-animal areas at NZCBI in Washington, D.C. and Front Royal, VA. Structural and environmental pest management services provided by the Entomologist include both direct structural and environmental pest management within and around animal areas, exhibits, landscaping, food services, and support facilities including animal commissary, offices, labs, and other workplaces for the control/management of common pests.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications: Degree: entomology; or a related discipline of the biological or physical sciences that included at least 16 semester hours in entomology. or Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major that included course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Evaluation of Education: Applicants with major fields of study in biology, zoology, or invertebrate zoology may fully meet the basic educational requirements if their academic preparation included substantive instruction (including appropriate laboratory and field work) in basic general entomology, taxonomy, physiology, ecology, general and organic chemistry, general physics, and mathematics or statistics that provided some training in the analysis of variables. In addition to the basic education requirement above: Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal Service.  For this position, Specialized experience is defined as demonstrated experience managing integrated pest management services for commercial services such as zoos, other animal facilities, laboratories, food services or restaurants and support facilities such as animal commissary and office environments. Qualification requirements, including one year time-in-grade at the next lower grade level for promotion candidates, must be met by the job announcement closing date.For information on qualification requirements, see Qualification Standards Handbook for General Schedule Positions viewable on OPM Website.  Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.
