This position is located within the Dental Service of the VA New Jersey Health Care System in Toms River, New Jersey performing procedures involving the fabrication and repairing of removable prostheses.

Duties

***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** Applies on in-depth knowledge of a full range of dental laboratory services and functions; Fabricates complicated appliances used in the treatment of various abnormalities; Boxes and pours models from impressions; Fabricates impressions trays and bite registration appliances; Carves denture base in wax, invests, packs and processes the case, de-flasks the dentures; Rearticulates for post-processing adjustments and perfects final form of the dentures; Removes partial dentures; Forms by hand, clasp, connectors, occlusal rests, etc., and solders these components in a complete framework; Constructs routine full/partial dentures, dental splints, obturators, model work for fixed prostheses and other laboratory products to support the treatment needs of staff dentists; Polishes prosthesis following adjustments; Understands the needs of each provider and specialty while collaborating with others on a daily basis; Perform all other duties as assigned. Qualifications

English Language Proficiency Requirement: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to perform the duties of this position. ~AND~ In addition to the English Language, to qualify for this position, you must meet one of the following: To qualify at the GS-8 level, all applicants must meet one of the following: Specialized Experience: At least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-7) in the Federal Service that has given me the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of a Dental Laboratory Technician, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Qualifying specialized experience includes use of dental laboratory material such as impression materials, plasters, stones, hydrocolloids, waxes, metals, acrylics, porcelain, and similar materials; use of laboratory equipment such as hand tools, dental lathes, engines, and hand pieces, furnaces, casting machines, presses, flasks, and related equipment; use of precision instruments such as articulators, surveyors, and microanalyzers; and construction of dental prosthetic appliances. Such assignments require a practical knowledge of oral anatomy and dentition, as well as knowledge of laboratory procedures. At this level applicants perform technical work in the fabrication and repair of both conventional and complicated dental prosthetic appliances ensuring conformity of a dentist's prescription. NOTE: Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must clearly indicate the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. ~OR~ Education: Successfully completed at least one and one-half (1½) years of graduate level education with course work or an internship that is directly related to the work of the Dental Laboratory Technician position. Such graduate education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. NOTE: Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation. ~OR~ Combination: Equivalent combination of successfully completed graduate education and specialized experience, as described above, may be used to meet total experience requirements. The education portion must include courses directly related to the work of the Dental Laboratory Technician position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. NOTE: Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation. Preferred experience: Due to constant changes in the technology and skills needed for this position, current/recent experience as a Dental Laboratory Technician is preferred. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Requirements: The work requires long periods of standing, sitting, and bending. The ability to lift plaster boxes weighing 30 pounds from the floor to the counter to the plaster bins is required.
