Duties

Serve as on-site Government health physics representative during the Decommissioning of the SM-1A Nuclear Power Plant. Ensure decommissioning contractor’s implementation of the radiation protection plan and radiation protection procedures comply with the Army decommissioning permit and applicable regulations. Review and provide feedback on radiological deliverables to ensure accuracy and compliance with USACE, Federal, State and Local regulations. Assess risk levels associated with the radiation hazards of previous site operations that allow for unrestricted radiological release. Communicate with contractors, users, sponsors, outside reviewers, representatives of base commanders, or others to ensure there is a full understanding of the scope of work for the technical aspect of the District Radiation Control program.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Incumbent must have completed, or successfully complete, the OSHA-mandated 40-hour training for hazardous waste site operations.
  • Incumbent must pass physical for performing work in level "C" personal protection and maintain active participation in the Corps of Engineers medical surveillance program as mandated by OSHA.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • The duties of this position require Travel up to approximately 50% of the time.
  • Upon supervisory notification, the incumbent is required to obtain and maintain security clearance up to TS/SCI Polygraph or lower depending on the security clearance requirement of the supported program and/or project.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Basic Requirement for Health Physicist: A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus OR B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or other education. OR C. Certification: Certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described in paragraph A. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes ((1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-12, or equivalent in other pay systems. Specialized experience is defined as: 1) Providing technical health physics expertise in all areas; 2) Reviewing established procedures to assure proper precautions are prescribed for the safety and health of employees and recommending changes, when necessary; and 3) Applying health physics principals to the investigation and remediation of contaminated sites. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-12). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
