This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: Position will be filled as a Term appointment not to exceed 13 months and may be extended up to a maximum of eight years.

Duties

Perform maintenance on light tactical and utility vehicles to include scheduled service, repair, and overhaul. Perform repairs on major components of equipment such as engines, transmissions and differentials. Read, understand, and interpret technical manuals and make repairs in accordance with those procedures. Safely operate vehicle lifts, jacks and hoists in accordance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidance. Conduct diagnostic testing and troubleshooting to determine nature and extent of required repairs. Use a wide range of test equipment such as test panels, engine and exhaust analyzers, dynamometers, oscilloscopes, and circuit testers. Operate all assigned equipment to include tactical vehicles and general purpose equipment to test for proper operation.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed Tier 1 background investigation.
  • Position will require occasional evenings, weekends and/or holiday hours to include occasional mandatory overtime, as mission dictates.
  • Must obtain and maintain a valid state driver's license.
  • Pre-employment and annual physicals are required.
  • Incumbent will be required to travel up to 20% of the time.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 70 pounds in the regular performance of duties.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Automotive Mechanic without more than normal supervision. Perform common Automotive Mechanic duties to include: (1) maintenance, repair, overhaul, replacement, installation on major components, assemblies and/or other systems such as engines, transmissions, electrical, exhaust, brakes; (2) use test equipment and/or machine tools to conduct diagnostic testing and perform necessary repair work; and (3) interpret repair manuals, technical specifications, and/or safety manuals. Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. To meet the basic eligibility, you must receive at least two points on the screen-out element indicated above. Your application will be further evaluated to determine if you meet the best qualified cut-off for referral to the selecting official. Physical Effort: Duties require standing, stooping, bending, stretching, and working in tiring or uncomfortable positions, such as overhead or in hard-to-reach or cramped locations. Frequently lifts parts and equipment that weigh up to 70 pounds. Occasionally must lift and carry heavier items with assistance from other workers or mechanical devices. Working Conditions: Work may be done inside a shop or outside exposed to prevailing weather conditions. Exposure to draft, vehicle fumes, dirt, grease and dust is common. May stand on hard surfaces for lengthy periods, crawl under vehicles, and may be required to work in or under vehicles exposed to dampness, heat or cold. Vehicle fluids, battery acids and solvents may cause skin burns or irritation. Frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts, bruises, electrical shocks, burns or muscle strains while working. May be required to use protective clothing or gear such as masks, safety shoes, goggles, hearing protection, safety glasses, and gloves.
