Duties

Controls or eradicates a wide variety of pests that are common to the area. Inspects buildings; storage, administrative and maintenance sites, improved and unimproved grounds; drainage ditches and other locations for evidence of damage and infestation by pests. Independently develops plans for the eradication, control and prevention of common household, structural, nuisance, and plant pests. Coordinates with environmental managers on operations which may have an impact on operations or the environment. Operates the RCRA 90 day Storage facility in accordance with various regulations and performs duties in support of hazardous material (HAZMAT)/hazardous waste accumulation areas. Operates heavy hand tools and power equipment. Incumbent must successfully complete initial training Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (Hazwoper) (40 hours) and annual refresher training as necessary. Incumbent must successfully complete initial Resource Conservation Recovery Act Training (RCRA) (40 hours)and refresher training as necessary. Incumbent must successfully complete initial Respiratory training and yearly refresher training as necessary.

Qualifications

To qualify for a Pest Controller, your resume and supporting documentation must support: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition. The SOE and minimum qualifications for this position is: Ability To Do The Work Of a Pest Controller Without More Than Normal Supervision (Screen-out Element): Receives detailed guidance on assignments in determining appropriate pest control measures, such as how and when the work should be accomplished. SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR (SPF): Must possess DoD Pesticide Applicator certification in accordance with DoDI 4150.07. A copy of your certification must be submitted as a supporting document at the time of application. Those who apply without a copy of their certification will be considered ineligible. Other Conditions of Employment: Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid state driver's license. May be required to operate forklifts with the capability of lifting loads weighing less than 10,000 pounds and on rare occasions may be required to operate forklifts capable of lifting loads weighing up to 15,000 pounds, and light motor vehicles (trucks), to move, transfer and/or transport material. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Effort: The work requires moderate to heavy physical effort such as lifting and carrying items often weighing 50 pounds or more. Carry chemical solutions and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds for extended periods. Occasionally work in cramped and inconvenient surroundings requiring manipulation of equipment for prolonged periods. Must stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in awkward position when performing pest control operations. Required to move furniture and equipment and operate high impact pneumatic hammers as well as various carpentry and masonry tools. Working Conditions: Work is performed both inside and outside in a variety of temperatures and weather conditions for extended periods of time. Employee is exposed to cold, drafty, hot, humid or wet working situations and works underneath buildings or other close, smelly, dirt or dusty areas with limited access. Incumbent wears protective clothing and respirators as required by regulations to reduce dangers from direct skin contact and inhalation of pesticides. Discomfort may be experienced while wearing protective devices for extended periods of time. Work requires the employees to follow proper safety procedures and use of standard safety equipment for themselves, other pest controllers, and other team members. Exposure to poisonous insects, reptiles, and plants and to wild and rabid animals is possible. Emergency Employee: The incumbent of this position has been designated as an emergency employee. The term "Emergency Employee" is used to designate those employees who must report to work in emergency situations. Emergency dismissal or closure announcements do not apply to these employees. The employees who occupy these positions may be required to report for duty in any situation that prevents significant numbers of employees in the local area from reporting for work on time or which requires agencies to close all or part of their activities.
