This position is for a Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic located at the Bath, New York, VA Medical Center. The Engineering Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic performs the maintenance and repairs on approximately 45 pieces of motorized equipment, powered by gasoline, lp gas, and diesel operated engines. To include but not limit to 1-3 yard front end loaders and backhoes, with hydraulic pumps, valves, and cylinders.
Duties
May include but are not limited to:
Communicates effectively with his Supervisor and Work Leader concerning repairs necessary for various pieces of motorized equipment, and after priority has been made, no technical supervision is furnished.
Notify orally and / or with written reports to the supervisor upon completion of repairs to report any unusual circumstances that occurred during the repairs of equipment he/she was working on, and to update the Supervisor on the status of equipment/vehicles.
Responsible for carrying out orders received by the supervisor and is also responsible for all repairs that are accomplished on equipment/vehicles, in that all parts repaired or replaced are assembled and properly meshed and tightened to the component.
Perform road tests on repaired equipment/vehicles to insure that they are safe and reliable for transport and use.
Properly fills out work orders and records pertinent information on records, timesheets, etc.
Responsible to insure that work area is clean, that proper tools are used in repair and all safety procedures are followed, when in doubt he/she will check with the Supervisor for the proper way to proceed.
Ensures that all tools, grinders, drills, saws, etc. are used in a safe and prudent manner.
Responsible for determining parts needed and to write accurate parts requirement for submission to his/her supervisor.
Responsible for the requisitioning of all repair parts for the operation of the equipment mentioned in "Skill and Knowledge".
Maintaing a sufficient number of spare parts on hand so that equipment is not dead any longer than necessary.
Thoroughly familiar with, and responsible for all the tools, and economical use of materials and equipment in the repair of the motorized equipment.
Required to comply with all Medical Center safety regulations with particular emphasis placed on those pertaining to the repair of motorized equipment.
Required at times to perform call-back duties, such as, Snow Removal, or to repair disabled vehicles or equipment after hours.

Physical Requirements: Requirements of this job description requires that the individual have no physical limitations in that 85 percent of the duties require moderate to strenuous physical effort in making overhead repairs when the vehicle or equipment is on a lift and where parts are worked on in hard to reach places that require him/her to stand, stoop, bend, stretch, crouch, kneel, as well as laying down to work in tiring uncomfortable positions. Heavy muscular effort is involved lifting, pulling and/or pushing heavy parts and components weighing up to 100lbs. Must have dexterity of foot, hand and mind at all times.
Working Conditions: For the most part the Incumbent's time is spent inside. Incumbent must frequently stand for long periods of time on hard surfaces. He/She will be exposed to some danger from carbon monoxide fumes and very noisy conditions, where dirt, dust, grease and other hazardous fluids that may cause irritation or burns to the skin exist. He/She is exposed to some dangers that may cause cuts, bruises, abrasions, shocks, burns, and strains. At times, the incumbent will have to work outside and be exposed to inclement weather conditions to include rain, snow, freezing conditions and extreme high temperatures while making repairs or operating vehicles or equipment.
