The VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare (VAGLAHS) is seeking a highly skilled/experienced Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) to serve in our fast-moving Same Day Surgery Unit. Must be able to carry out nursing assignments independently in accordance with unit standards and established guidelines Collaborates with registered Nurses.
Duties
Typical duties include but are not limited to:
Duties include, but are not limited to the following:
1. Responsible for Clinical Reminder completion (including but not exclusive to):
Alcohol Screening, Tobacco Screening, PTSD Screening, Depression Screening, Advance
Directives, COVID-19 Screening, Suicide Screening, Patient Education
2. Completes vital signs belongings inventories and other delegated nursing tasks such as nursing documentation
3. Incorporates an understanding of principles of infection control and hand hygiene into
clinical practice
4. Demonstrates understanding of proper body mechanics as this position requires
walking, standing, stooping, lifting, bending, pushing, and turning
5. Improves organizational performance by creating a positive work culture and adheres to
principles of Nursing Ethics as supported by the American Nurses Association and the
mission, vision, values, human resource management, and culture of the organization
6. Works in the perioperative setting Same Day Surgery as assigned to arrange, organize and clean the
environment, screen patients, and assist with the provision of a variety of
patient care services adjusting for fluctuating patient load and staffing to ensure smooth
clinic operation and maintenance. The LVN is expected to meet clinic priorities and
deadlines and to provide quality care facilitating efficient operations and in accordance with designated standards of care and organizational policies and procedures
7. Provides nursing care to patients and families as members of specialized population
cohorts such as women Veterans, the homeless, dementia and Alzheimer patients,
victims of abuse, and those with military related trauma endured both physically and
psychologically
10. Administers medications using recognized rights of medication administration and the
bar-code system, if available, including nebulizer treatments
11. Collects routine laboratory specimens following organizational policies and
procedures
12. Performs standard clinical diagnostic screenings such as, but not limited to, blood
glucose monitoring, bladder scanning, venipuncture (as needed), minor dressing
changes, and electrocardiograms
13. Certified BLS, and administers American Heart Association basic life support (CPR,
cardiopulmonary resuscitation) as needed
14. Assists with clinical orientation of new employees
15. Participates in-service programs, Continuing education programs
17. Adheres to patient teaching protocols as appropriate
18. Assumes responsibility for occupational growth and development and completes assignments
in the Talent Management System (TMS) learning platform which can be offered
locally, regionally, and nationally
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday. 8hr tours, 5:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 11:30am to 08:00pm

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).
Education or Training: Must be a graduate of a practical or vocational nursing program approved by the appropriate State accrediting agency and/or the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing at the time the program was completed by the applicant, or have you completed Health care education in the military service or training in the military service.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Grade Determinations:
GS-6 Experience: Completion of at least one year at the GS 5 level or equivalent of qualifying experience as an LPN or LVN, fully meeting all performance requirements for the GS 5 LPN and be technically proficient in initiating, performing and completing assigned duties in providing care to variable patient populations. Completed work needs only a general review by a registered nurse (RN) or physician (MD/DO) for appropriateness and conformity with established policies/procedures.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-6. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-3 to GS-6.
