This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Office of the Chief Readiness Support Officer (OCRSO), Systems and Information Integration Office (SI2O). OCRSO is responsible for mission support, logistics integration, and DHS's real estate, personal property, and fleet and mobile assets portfolios. The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a Data Scientist in the Analysis Branch within SI2O.
Non-BU: This is a non-bargaining unit position.
Duties
SI2O delivers and facilitates data and information sharing to enable insights, innovation, performance measurement and strategic decision making for the Department's mission support operations. With a focus on data science, analytics, reporting, data and information sharing and governance, and mission support, SI2O strives to build a culture of data driven decision making and to enhance the workforce's ability to leverage data and analytics. The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a Data Scientist in the SI2O Analysis Branch.
As a Data Scientist, GS-1560-12/13, your typical work assignments may include:
Utilizes advanced mathematical, statistical and machine learning techniques to analyze and interpret complex datasets.
Collaborates and contributes to the development and execution of agency wide data strategies and plans. Collaborates with cross- functional teams, providing expertise in data science.
Ensures data privacy and security measures are applied to data analysis. Ensures compliance with federal data governance standards and regulations.
Creates and presents clear and impactful visualizations of data insights to diverse audiences.

Requirements

Qualifications
To be qualified for this position, you must meet the basic education or work education/experience combination requirements for Data Scientist positions in the federal government. These requirements are:
Basic Requirements:
Degree: Mathematics, statistics, computer science, data science or field directly related to the position. The degree must be in a major field of study (at least at the baccalaureate level) that is appropriate for the position; OR
Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major field of study (30 semester hours) as shown in prior statement above, plus additional education or appropriate experience.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the Specialized Experience.
Specialized Experience GS-12:
You qualify for the GS-12 grade level if you possess one year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal government, performing duties such as:
Using statistical and machine learning techniques to analyze datasets and provide information to decision-makers.
Developing and implementing predictive models to support decision-making.
Performing queries using database and analytical tools and program language to develop data-analytical visualizations.
Specialized Experience GS-13:
To qualify for the GS-13 grade level if you possess one year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal government, performing duties such as:
Extracting meaning from and interpreting data to address complex and consequential mission support and business-related challenges.
Consulting for data analysis utilizing statistical techniques to analyze the data to identify patterns and trends and interpret the data to discover solutions and opportunities.
Building analytic models from large volumes of historical data, deploying them for business consumption, monitoring for accuracy and bias.
Substitution of education in lieu of specialized experience may not be used for this grade level.

Education
Education is not substitutable for specialized experience at this grade level.
Education must be accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education in order for it to be credited towards qualifications; applicant's resumes and supporting documentation should only reflect education received from schools accredited by such institutions.
