The WG-2805-10 Electrician serves at Columbia VA Health Care System in Columbia, SC and reports directly to the Supervisor in the Station Electric Shop, with second level supervision from the Maintenance Control Manager. Incumbent must have skills and knowledge of installation and repair, problem solving, troubleshooting and preventative maintenance. Incumbent must concentrate on planning, organizing, and have the ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision.
Duties
Duties include but are not limited to:
Maintain electrical systems which support the medical center and its campus (regularly subjected to extreme demands for accuracy of control motion, etc. under severe conditions such as high speed, temperature, pressure, and pressure distortions.)
Fabricates, installs, modifies, and troubleshoots specialized electrical control or monitoring systems.
Uses precision testing equipment to perform Preventative Maintenance activities.
Installs, repairs, and replaces electrical components carrying 120-440 volts in building electrical systems.
Runs conduit and metal raceways from components to building power panels.
Involves nonstandard industrial or research and development applications which lack clear precedent and require extensive adaption of methods.
Tightens loose connections, replaces damaged or deteriorated insulation and taping, and exercises cut outs to ensure that they are working properly.
Perform preventative maintenance on Emergency Generators, motor controls, life safety devices, lighting, among others, inspect components for abnormal wear, check battery level, fuel level, oil level and temperature, run hours, amps, volts, and HZ on each phase, battery charger reading and block heaters.
Use an electric or gasoline-powered pump weighing up to 100 lbs. to evacuate water from vaults.
Maintains and installs internal lighting.
Maintains and repairs conduit and wiring; pulls out damaged on deteriorated conduit and wiring; and installs new conduit and wiring.
Identifies operating problems in building/motor control panels and corrects problems.
Utilizes manual and power wrenches and screwdrivers, pliers, wire cutters, wire snippers, adjustable wrenches, hammers, and levels to tighten connections and repair or replace damaged conduit, insulating material and wires.
Provides highly skilled craft labor, working with tools to maintain the Hospitals electrical distribution center of both single and three phase electrical power.
Inspects connections between spliced wires; removes deteriorated or damaged insulation from splices/cables; tightens splice connectors; and replaces insulation and re-tapes connections.
This position traces circuits using toners, checks the insulation value of wires with meggers; employs steel fish tape to pull new wires through conduits.
Uses mechanical lift devices to access pole mounted lights, accesses internal electrical systems and components as high as 50' above floor level with mechanical platforms.
Employ voltmeters, amp meters, circuit testers and phase meters to evaluate the operating condition of control panels and identify problems.
Work Schedule: Full Time, Monday - Thursday, 6:00am - 4:30pm
Position Description Title/PD#: Electrician/PD10111A
Physical Requirements: Regular walking tours of the plant to conduct inspections of equipment which include some lifting, kneeling, standing, climbing and stooping. Repairs occasionally require working in awkward and cramped positions and lifting up to 50 pounds.
Working Conditions: The incumbent must be able to tolerate exposure to extreme temperatures ranging from - 100 F to 1300 F, depending on seasonal weather conditions and location of interior/exterior work assignments. Exposure to chemicals and fumes is common, as well as the ever-present hazards of electrical shock and burns, and the physical hazards of electro-mechanical equipment. Exposure to radiation and contaminated or infectious biological hazards may occur. The incumbent must be able to tolerate noise levels up to 95 decibels when working in mechanical rooms and other areas and must be able to tolerate exposure to dirt, dust, pollen and other airborne debris. The incumbent must be able to work in proximity with 120 - 13,800-volt power sources up to eight hours per day. The incumbent must be able to tolerate exposure to dampness in underground vaults.
