As an Occupational Health Nurse at the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility (NBAF) you will assist in providing oversight and technical consultation on all environmental, health, safety and security issues with the goal of providing and ensuring a safe and healthful environment for employees and visitors. Duties

The duties may include, but are not limited to: Advises new employees on preventative medical and medical surveillance procedures available. Collaborates with local physicians and clinics for guidance regarding health issues and medical surveillance, preventative medical, and work related injuries. Develops health protocols for investigational vaccines and life threatening select agents and reviews them yearly, or more often as needed, with approval from appropriate entity. Advises pregnant employees of potential work related hazards. Provides emergency medical treatment for employees who sustain major illnesses or injuries. Schedules yearly CPR-AED training classes, emergency drills and first aid training for volunteer response team and maintains records. Maintains records of all job-connected injuries and illnesses and collaborates with Human Resources on reportable job-related injuries. Monitors and provides guidance for employees with chronic health problems. Coordinates specific immunization efforts and follow-up as needed

  • You must receive and maintain a favorably adjudicated Public Trust - High Risk background investigation (Personnel Security form SF-85P) and Criminal Justice Information Services Division (CJIS) approval for handling/storing Select Agents and Toxins

  • The selectee is expected to disrobe, shower in and shower out, and wear laboratory-issued uniforms when working in high Bio-Security Level 2, 3, and 4 laboratories as a regular part of his/her duties.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement, including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below. BASIC REQUIREMENT: A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (external link), Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (external link), Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education (external link), or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (external link) at the time the degree was obtained. Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (external link) is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools. Licensure: For all grade levels and positions, applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination (external link). In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. FOR THE GS-12 LEVEL: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-11 level) that may have been obtained in the private or public (local, county, state, Federal) sectors which demonstrates: Planning, organizing, and directing activities related to the occupational health program, including but not limited to patient assessment, preventive health, job hazard analyses, and emergency response Providing authoritative advice and consultation to all levels of management on all aspects of the occupational health program Negotiating, administering, and monitoring interagency agreements for the provision of occupational health services Note: There is no education substitution for this grade level.\ TRANSCRIPTS are required if: This position requires specific coursework or a degree in a specific field to be basically qualified. This education must have been successfully completed and obtained from an accredited school, college, or university Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
