This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for DHA for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) positions to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
About the Position: perform a variety of duties involved in the upkeep of the installation's real property
Duties
Repairing buildings, structures, fittings, partitions, and wood or wood substitute articles requiring close tolerance fit and structural soundness.
Bracing, replacing, rebuilding or loosening supports and planks to maintain permanently installed wooden staging, walkways, and roofs.
Interpreting drawings, blueprints and specifications to select lumber and supplies and to determine layout and work sequences.
Plans and completes projects from initial layout to final assembly or installation.
Constructing and repairing cement and concrete surfaces and structures.
Operate motor vehicles equipped with special purposes bodies such as dumpster or packer trucks; tractors; and self propelled or towed rollers.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Maintenance Mechanic (Carpenter) ~ without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common Maintenance Mechanic (Carpenter) duties. I can perform work associated with more than one trade area such as carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, grounds work and other trades appropriate to this position. I have knowledge to selects lumber, materials, and supplies required to complete assigned work. Sets up and operates a wide variety of woodworking machines and tools. I follow simple diagrams and/or drawings. I work under close supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed.- Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
PHYSICAL EFFORT Work requires the incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in uncomfortable positions for extended periods of time. The incumbent frequently lifts, carries, and sets up equipment and parts that weigh up to 50 pounds; heavier objects are lifted with the assistance of others. may work in tight or cramped places at the job site or work in shops. Works while standing, sitting, or kneeling requiring reaching, lifting and bending while using hand tools and powered tools. Uses ladders to climb up and down and works from scaffolding.
WORKING CONDITIONS Work is performed both inside and outside; sometimes in cramped, damp and drafty quarters. Noise from hammers, saws and other power shop tools is frequent. There is dust, and sometimes dirt, when repairing structures and operating power saws. Injuries may occur in lifting heavy pieces of lumber or equipment; cuts and bruises in using hand tools and equipment; more serious injuries in operating power tools and in falls from ladders and scaffolds. Subject to infection from unsanitary worksites and injury from occasional use of caustic soda and hot lead. occasionally encounters unpleasant odors. Drives vehicle in all types of traffic and weather, and is exposed to the possibility of accidents.
