The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period is May through October but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: May 2024 Many vacancies located in Yosemite National Park and Sequoia-Kings Canyon National Parks.

Duties

Constructs and maintains trails by cleaning water bars, building dry/wet rock retaining wall, and rip-rap, removing excess rock on tread, brushing, cutting trail edge berm, digging dip drains and clearing trail of trees, obstacles and debris. Operates and maintains rock drills, chainsaws, wrenches and power tools. Assist trail leaders in demonstrating to crew members the concepts/techniques of trail work and backcountry living ethics. Assigned to isolated backcountry locations for periods of 4 to 14 weeks at a time. Applicant must be able to work and live cooperatively with other individuals under primitive conditions for prolonged periods of time. Physical Effort: Heavy physical exertion is frequently required in bending, lifting, and using hand and power tools in trail work. Examples of typical strenuous activity, include frequently lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 100 pounds., carrying and rolling rocks and logs, moving rocks of several tons with rock bars, using hammers to crush or shape rock, and using shovels extensively; frequently walks up to 20 miles daily; and must not have potential emergency medical problems that could complicate work in remote areas for extended periods of time. Working Conditions: Incumbent must have the ability to live and work effectively in isolated backcountry areas in close contact with small numbers of people. Incumbent must live and work out-of-doors on projects including mountainous terrain up to 14,000 feet in elevation in all extremes of weather. Trail work is dusty and hazardous conditions may exist when moving rock, working in and around rock slide areas, working around explosives, falling and bucking trees, and working around machinery.

SELECTIVE FACTOR: This position requires regular and recurring work and camping in rugged mountainous backcountry above 7,000 ft elevation for extended periods of time. Selectees must be able to hike by foot in the backcountry at high altitude for extended periods of time while carrying backpacks, tools and supplies of at least 50 lbs, and be able to camp for several days at a time. You must reference this experience in your resume or you may be found ineligible. - AND - Have the ability to do the work of a Maintenance Worker (Trails) without more than normal supervision. (Screen out) This includes work such as maintenance worker tasks on a trail crew or group responsible for carrying out work on trails; constructed rock walls, water bars, and retainer bars; have used chainsaws to cut wood or limb trees; have used a jackhammer.
