Employee will be assigned to Prosthetics and Sensory Aids (Orthotic & Prosthetic Services), VA Health Care System, St. Louis, MO, Jefferson Barracks Division, and is responsible for fabricating and repairing custom molded and made prostheses and orthoses under the supervision of certified practitioners.

Duties

Duties include, but may not be limited to the following: Fabricates basic and custom prosthetic and orthotic appliances, including but not limited to foot orthotics, ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs), knee ankle foot orthosis (KAFOs), prostheses (trans-tibial, transfemoral) using a variety of single and composite materials (i.e., acrylic resin, carbon fiber, thermoplastics, silicone, metals, leather, etc.) having numerous curves, angles, and shapes. Completes work utilizing clinician specifications via lab work tickets and/or verbal/written communication. Examines and evaluates parts and structures to determine repairs required and tools/materials necessary to accomplish the work. Determines what bonding agent to use considering such factors as the dimension, density, shape, and thickness of internal elements. Performs functional testing, verifies work log and controls to ensure serialization of products, and stamps off on completed work. Maintains and manages proper inventory and stock levels to ensure componentry and necessary inventory are in stock. Maintains an accurate inventory of fabrication materials. Maintains all chemical inventory in Safety Data Sheet (SDS) in accordance with required safety standards. Maintains safe, clean, and orderly work environment and fabrication laboratory. Performs other related duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Full Time, Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm Recruitment & Relocation Incentives: Not authorized

Qualifications

Related qualifying experience includesfabricating basic and custom prosthetic and orthotic appliances; utilizing clinician specifications to complete work; determining repairs required and tools necessary; applying commonly used resins, release agents, and epoxies; and utilizing and maintaining a variety of lab equipment and tools (i.e., band saws, grinders, drills, and other power tools). Note: Your resume must clearly support this experience to be creditable. We will not make assumptions regarding experience. PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: The position demands a moderate degree of exertion and a high degree of dexterity, long periods of standing and walking. The work requires some physical exertion, prolong periods of standing and working at a variety of machines, bending, stooping, crouching, reaching and stretching to work on devices and appliances. There may be recurring lifting and moving of moderately heavy supplies and equipment such as bags of plaster and large sheets of plastic weighing less than 50 pounds. The work environment is generally in the prosthetic/orthotic laboratory where the employee may be exposed to toxic and caustic fumes and materials and personal protective equipment must be used. The work is frequently around machines, which may expose the employee to dust, noise and potential injury. Employee ensures that all machine safeguards are in place and properly used at all times. The incumbent will ensure that gloves, hearing protection and proper dust masks are used when needed. The incumbent will ensure that the dust collectors, fume hoods and air handlers are on when working in the lab. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications.
