The VISN 19 Pharmacy Technician will provide technical, basic clinical, program management support to the VISN 19 formulary management and clinical pharmacy programs. This includes helping achieve positive patient outcomes through interactions with community providers & interdisciplinary teams. The Pharmacy Technician will function in a clinical role, providing initial review of prescription requests and contacting prescribers in the community for needed information related to the prescription.

VA Careers - Pharmacy: https://youtube.com/embed/Fn_ickNBEws Clinical Pharmacy and Formulary Management Assists the VISN and facility Formulary Managers and Clinical Pharmacists with patient and community provider professional contact, data collection and analysis, entry of information into patient record and chart review. Triages telephone calls from patients and providers to address formulary issues, evaluates problems, provides solutions, or refers to the pharmacist when the problem is beyond the technician's level of knowledge or expertise. Proficient in reviewing the medical record and lab results. Follows VHA criteria for use, monographs, protocols, and local algorithms to evaluate appropriateness of prescription requests and make preliminary adjudications. Provides education on pharmacy topics, including prescription refills, pharmacy dispensing processes and criteria for use. Documents communication with patients and providers in the medical record. Notifies pharmacist of issues related to prescription duplication, medication compliance, allergies or adverse reactions, which are identified through patient and provider communication or medical record review. Administrative Functions Provides program support by faxing and mailing VA education or clinical pharmacy material. Reviews consults on a routine basis to assist in completion within VHA national performance metrics. Answers routine inquiries from physicians, nurses and other health care professionals regarding procedures, non-formulary process questions. Updates and maintains VISN databases as required. Assists in conducting and reporting internal audits as required. Maintains all pertinent professional and administrative records as necessary. Assists in data collection and analysis for drug utilization evaluation, medication errors, adverse drug events and performance improvement and cost-avoidance initiatives. Patient Confidentiality The Clinical Pharmacy Technician will maintain strict patient confidentiality in performance of all clinical and administrative functions. Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Certification: Must pass a national certification exam and hold an active national certification through either: by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or National Healthcareer association (NHA). English Language Proficiency. Pharmacists must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d) Physical Requirements. See VA Directive and Handbook 5019 Grade Determinations: GS-09: Experience: One year of progressively complex experience equivalent to the lower grade level, GS-08. In addition, you must demonstrate the following technical Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) listed below. Expert knowledge serving as a key resource advising others in their particular specialty area or section of the pharmacy (such as procurement, sterile compounding (USP compounding standards), controlled substances DEA, automation, clinical pharmacy, lead tech, contact center, etc.). Skill in analyzing data for self-driven (independent) performance improvement projects, workload analysis and statistical reports. Skill in solving problems and implementing corrective actions to maximize outcomes in their program area. Ability to maintain special accreditations and prepare for national reviews/inspections (e.g., The Joint Commission, Inspector General, American Society of Health System Pharmacists®, controlled substance inspections). Ability to develop training programs and material for orientation, competency development and educational needs for regulatory requirements within the specialized pharmacy program area. Preferred Experience: 2 years as a VA Pharmacy Technician, communication with non-VA providers' offices, and review of non-formulary medication request. References: VA HANDBOOK 5005/159 PART II APPENDIX G28 The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-9. Physical Requirements: The work is administrative and technical in nature, primarily sedentary. Work is performed in an office or home office setting and requires the use of numerous communication modalities. Some travel and tour of duty changes may be required to meet the demands of the position. Occasional light physical effort may be required.
