The Surgical Technician (ST) is a member of the surgical team and provides assistance to the surgeon and other team members during surgical procedures. The Surgical Technician participates with the surgical team members in planning and implementing complex procedures under the general supervision of the surgical team.

Duties

The Surgical Technician functions as a primary operating room scrub person responsible for handling instruments, supplies and equipment during all surgical procedures such as: open heart, thoracic, major vascular, neurosurgery, microsurgery and total joint replacement surgery. This position is located at the William. S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital, Madison, WI. Duties include, but may not be limited to the following: Functions as a primary scrub person responsible for handling instruments, supplies, and equipment during all surgical procedures such as: open heart, thoracic, major vascular, neurosurgery, and total joint replacement surgery. Sets up sterile field with al required items for each procedure such as air-powered equipment, fiber optic equipment, laparoscopic equipment, microscopes, laser, arthroscopy equipment, urologic equipment, recording devices, and other operating room supplies and equipment. Plans and discusses each procedure with surgical professionals and assures that all supplies and equipment are available prior to the surgical procedure Prepares, organizes, and maintain highly complex sterile surgical set-ups Observes and responds promptly to each stage of the surgical procedure and anticipates the needs of the surgeon by maintaining a high level of concentration for extended periods of time Utilizes universal precautions and follows all infection control policies and procedures when handling specimens, supplies, and equipment Assists the team members with care of the patient, i.e., positioning, prepping, and obtaining supplies, and transportation to and from the OR Handles all specimens appropriately, including labeling, keeping organized on table and transporting to lab In conjunction with the circulating Registered Nurse (RN), performs sponge and instrument counts to verify accuracy. Responsible for the accountability for all surgical instruments and equipment during the surgical procedures. Sharps and sponges are handled per policy. Assists the surgeon by performing such procedures as preparing skin grafts, suctioning, holding retractors, applying skin staples, and cutting sutures. Prepares prosthesis and surgical devices during procedures. Assists in training residents, medical students, nursing students, operating room technology, students, and new Operating Room (OR), staff in the operation of equipment, sterile technique, handling of instruments, and OR procedures to include the scrub role in surgical procedures. Collaborates with RN sub specialists to provide in-services or initiates in-services on own. Maintains OR area Assess equipment needs and maintains adequate stock of supplies and materials Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, Day Shift, on-call hours, occasionally holidays, weekends, pm, and nights for call. Permanent Change of Station (PCS): Not Authorized Financial Disclosure Report: Not required Position Description Title/PD#: Health Aid and Technician (Surgical Technician)/PD07182A Physical Requirements: Duties regularly require providing manual assistance in lifting and positioning patients, most of which are in stages of unconsciousness. There are extensive periods of regular and recurring standing, walking, bending, lifting, pushing, reaching and prolonged stretching to provide easy accessibility of instruments and supplies for the surgeon. Incumbent must be dexterous in passing instruments to surgeons without compromising principles of aseptic technique and in a manner requiring little or no effort from the surgeon.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-7 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-6. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE GS-7: Applicants must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience that required technical application, knowledge, methods, and techniques of this position. Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-6 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience includes: preparing and handling instruments, supplies, and equipment during surgical procedures; scrubbing for assigned surgical procedure ranging from simple to complex; maintaining a sterile field; anticipating the needs of the surgeon; and positioning and prepping patients for surgical procedures. OR SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE: Successful completion of one year of graduate level education. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university. One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school. (Transcript Required) OR COMBINING EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Combination of successfully completed post high school education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. (Transcript Required) Highly Preferred: Completion of surgical technologist training. Experience as a surgical technician in a major medical facility affiliated with a University teaching program within the past 2 years.
