The Fayetteville VA Medical Center, Fayetteville, NC is seeking for highly qualified Supervisory Medical Supply Technician to work within our Sterile Processing Service.
Duties
ASSIGNED DUTIES FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBLITIES:
- Works closely with the O.R. Nursing Unit Supervisor and/or nursing staff to ensure all sterilization parameters are being implemented correctly.
- Supervises staff to ensures appropriate decontamination, preparation, and cleaning have taken place before sterilization.
- Is knowledgeable about function, use and care of steam sterilizer, immediate use sterilizer ultrasonic cleaner, washer disinfector, Sterrad, Medivator, and other required equipment.
- Maintains proper records and biological reports according to Department policies and procedures.
- Is responsible for checking the indicators and reporting any discrepancies.
- Knows the location of instrumentation and acts as a resource person to other staff members.
- Maintains traffic flow between decontamination area and Sterile Processing area according to Hospital Infection Control Policy.
- Is responsible for the Quality Control process and documentation for department sterilizer system.
- Reports to the appropriate manager immediately when a problem is noted.
- Establishes recalls when necessary and documents accordingly.
- Ensures environment is clean and safe and appropriate cleaning schedule is maintained for facility sterilizers and disinfectors.
- Is accountable for directing the flow of work within the Sterile Processing unit.
- Communicates with the O.R. Nursing Unit Supervisor and staff concerning items out for repair as the daily schedule might be affected.
- Demonstrates appropriate communication skills with physicians, staff and others and maintains professionalism.
- Assumes responsibility for attending informal educational and in-service programs to enhance skills and knowledge, requesting and accepting supervision in performing new skills of practice and documentation, and attending and participating in pertinent or mandatory unit meetings and in-services.
- Is responsible for maintaining high standards in dress, hygiene, conduct, attitude and performance and maintaining regular attendance and punctuality standards.
- Level 2 Certification- Membership or certification by other national recognized organizations such as International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management {IAHCSMM) or Certification Board of Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD).
- Continuing Education Units {CEUs), at least 12 hours annually.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; Hours 8:00a - 4:30p

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Experience. Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work;
or
Education. One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position;
or
Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.
Certification. None
English Language Proficiency. MSTs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j, this part.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

***PREFFERED EXPERIENCE: Three years Sterile Processing Service experience and management/lead SPS experience.
Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met when determining the grade of candidates.
GS-08 Supervisory Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing)
EXPERIENCE: You must have at least 1 year experience to the next lower grade level, GS-07 as a Medical Supply Technician.
1. Detailed knowledge of complex surgical instruments used in operating rooms and clinic settings.
2. Ability to assemble specialty operating room and clinic instrument sets.
3. In-depth knowledge of sterilization and cleaning equipment.
4. Ability to communicate both orally and in writing in order to convey information and thoughts to others.
In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs for the GS-08:
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
1. Ability to manage, interact and deal with individuals of varying backgrounds.
2. Ability to direct staff and manage tasks to be completed.
3. Ability to oversee and supervise all aspects of decontamination, preparation, sterilization, monitoring, and distribution of RME.
4. Ability to perform a full range of supervisory duties, including assigning, planning and evaluating work, recommending awards, approving leave, identifying training needs, and resolving staff issues

Physical Requirements: The employee will be required to stand and move from one part of a room to another while performing the duties of the job. The employee is required to frequently lift individual instruments or instrument trays weighing up to 35 pounds from just above the floor to waist level. The technician will be required to transport trays and equipment on carts that may weigh up to 300 pounds when full. The employee must be acutely aware of safety requirements when moving these carts as they have areas that extend outside the visible area that can cause harm to other staff or equipment.
