Duties

As the Hydrologist in this position, you will: This position has responsibility for leading or participating on hydrologic studies of considerable scope and complexity serving as a project leader or member of an interdisciplinary team. Incumbent plans, directs, performs, and/or coordinates comprehensive hydrologic studies or significant components of extensive studies, that describe and interpret hydrologic conditions in order to define, analyze, forecast, or describe both natural and human-induced hydrologic changes in the area. Incumbent is considered a discipline expert in the field of hydrology with an advanced level of professional competence who provides expert technical advice and assistance to Land, resource, facility managers, and other internal and internal clients. This position serves as a project leader or senior project member for complete hydrological investigation by planning, conducting, and reporting on interpretive studies. Much of the work may be in direct coordination with other specialists to accomplish habitat management and restoration. Assignments will need to be coordinated throughout the year with other program leads, District leadership, and Field Offices.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience and/or education requirements described below. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience. If qualifying based on education, a copy of your unofficial transcripts must be provided with your application. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: To be considered minimally qualified for this position, you must demonstrate that you have the required specialized experience and/or education for the respective grade level in which you are applying. BASIC REQUIREMENT: A. Education: Successful completion of a Bachelor's degree (or higher) in physical or natural science, or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in any combination of courses in hydrology, the physical sciences, geophysics, chemistry, engineering science, soils, mathematics, aquatic biology, atmospheric science, meteorology, geology, oceanography, or the management or conservation of water resources. The course work must have included at least 6 semester hours in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours in physics. NOTE: You must include transcripts. OR B. Combination: Successful completion of a combination of education and experience. This includes course work as described in statement A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Appropriate experience is defined as the performance of scientific functions related to the study of water resources, based on and requiring a professional knowledge of related sciences and the consistent application of basic scientific principles to the solution of theoretical and practical hydrologic problems. Examples of acceptable experience: field or laboratory work that would require application of hydrologic theory and related sciences such as geology, geo-chemistry, geophysics, or civil engineering to making observations, taking samples, operating instruments, assembling data from source materials, analyzing and interpreting data, and reporting findings orally and in writing. NOTE: You must include transcripts. A. Specialized Experience: Applicants must have one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service (obtained either in the private or public sectors) performing the following: 1) applying the principles, practices, and theories of hydrology and/or hydraulic/hydrologic engineering for program schedules, budget documents, and related information pertaining to water operations and hydrologic functions; 2) assigning responsibility for work or making special assignments as necessary and evaluating the accomplishment of work consistent with policies and guidelines; and 3) maintaining cooperative relations with water user organizations and Federal, State, and local government agencies on matters pertaining to water resources. 4) ensuring compliance with the Clean Water Act and other laws regulating soil and water resources through conducting sampling, monitoring water quality, coordination of study efforts. Status merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-11 is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-12 level. (Must submit your SF-50 that shows Time-in-Grade eligibility and reflects your title, series, and grade. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies".
