The incumbent is a member of Prosthetic & Sensory Aids Service (PSAS) within the Prosthetic Service Line under VISN 9 . The incumbent will be assigned to the Memphis Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC).
Duties
The incumbent provides patient care and support services to the Veteran population. The Prosthetic Treatment Center serves outlying Prosthetic and Sensory Aids Services (PSAS), patients in the hospital, and the outpatient treatment centers.
Major duties:
Patient check-ins, greeting patients, families, and vendors. Examine clinical health records, claim folders, and medical entitlements for prosthetic items and services.
Identify priorities on pending requests and ensures that pending requests are posted to the suspense log and enters data to verify workload statistics.
Utilize office automation equipment such as computer, Microsoft word processors, fax machines, calculators, copiers, and multi-line telephones.
Enter data into the VACO National Prosthetic Patient Database. Operate the National Prosthetic and Sensory Aids software package to maintain a detailed and accurate accounting of all actions taken for veterans and documents their records (VAF 10-2319) showing items and/or services provided.
Maintain close contact with physicians, therapists, and nurses prescribing items and/or services necessary.
Maintain continuous liaisons with vendors, medical center professionals, other staff, veterans and their families to ensure timely acquisition and provision of prosthetic appliances and/or services.
Determine veteran eligibility for prosthetic appliances and/or services through personal interviews, phone conversations, and letters.
Comply with all safety prevention rules and regulations, using protective equipment when required. Promptly report all accidents and notify the supervisor of unsafe and/or unhealthful conditions in the workplace.

Qualifications

You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-4 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Knowledge of medical, prosthetics, and orthotic terminology; ability to use office automation equipment such as computer, Microsoft Office software, fax machines, calculators, copiers, and multi-line telephones; enter, extract, and maintain information in electronic data processing systems and databases; build and maintain trustworthy relationships with patients, families, staff, and vendors; and demonstrate tact, poise, and professionalism in person-to person interactions, and telephone and email communications.

Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully completed four years of education above the high school level in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite is creditable for this position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. One year of full time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school. TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED.

Combination: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total experience requirements. TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED.
Typing Proficiency: This position requires the skills of a qualified typist. In addition to meeting the experience and/or education requirements, you must be able to type at least 40 words per minute.

Physical Requirements: Lifting of orthotic/prosthetic stock and appliances is required. The stress encountered throughout the workday in coordinating the delivery of prosthetic appliances and/or services with physicians, social workers, therapists, seriously ill and severely disabled veterans and their families, vendors, and the arranging of delivery for health care and life support equipment is an unavoidable aspect of the position.
